B&N Unveils Redesigned Nook Tablet Devices
Not to be outdone in a year that has seen a series of new tablet devices released by its competitors, Barnes & Noble has unveiled the 7-inch Nook HD starting at $199 (8GB) and a 9-inch Nook HD+ starting at $269 (16GB), a new generation of redesigned lightweight multimedia tablet readers with sharper, high resolution screens, faster processors and new shopping interfaces and recommendation software. The new devices are available for preorder beginning today in the U.S. and the U.K. for shipping in late October and they will be on store shelves by November. more »
AAP 'Disappointed' By ALA Open Letter on E-Books
The Association of American Publishers has issued a response criticizing an open letter recently published by the American Library Association on the e-book issue. "At a time when individual publishing houses are more actively engaged than ever in exploring viable solutions to e-lending," the statement reads, "we are disappointed that the new leadership at ALA chose this path, with this particular timing, to criticize those efforts." The AAP and ALA are still set to meet September 27 to discuss the e-book lending issue. more »

Disney Completes California and NYC Transition
Back in April Disney Publishing Worldwide announced that it was moving its employees from White Plains to New York City and Glendale, Calif.; that transition is now nearing completion. Jennifer Levine, v-p, global communications for Disney, told PW that the decision to relocate the majority of DPW's operations to Glendale "was made with the goal of more closely aligning and integrating DPW with the Walt Disney Company's incredible content and distribution platforms, which are based in California." more »
Harper Finalizes Book, Bible and Sales Teams for Christian Division, Mum on Details
PW has learned that on Tuesday afternoon a staffing announcement was made internally to the Thomas Nelson and Zondervan employees who now comprise the HarperCollins Christian Publishing Division. A company spokesperson stated that the division has "finalized its structure and teams for Books, Bibles and Sales leadership. This means that our editorial staff can be 100% focused on acquiring and developing projects." The company declined to provide any further details at this time. more »

The management and staff of Veen Bosch & Keuning Publishing Group, a major publisher of trade books in the Netherlands and Belgium, will take over ownership of the company November 1. The house has been owned by NDC|VBK Publishing Group. more »

Jumpstart's Read for the Record Gets Senate Stamp of Approval
October 4, 2012 is Jumpstart's Read for the Record Day, per U.S. Senate Resolution 584, adopted on September 21. Jumpstart, a national organization promoting early childhood education, launched this annual literacy initiative in 2006, in partnership with Penguin and the Pearson Foundation. This year's Read for the Record effort extends beyond the usual one-day commemoration, and will entail a week-long celebration of reading that culminates on October 4. more » »
Tracking Amazon: Rowling and Riordan Battle for Top Spot
The day before the much anticipated release of The Casual Vacancy, J.K. Rowling's book has reached #1 on Amazon (topping No Easy Day), and #22 on Kindle. But another hot preorder is right behind Rowling: Rick Riordan's The Mark of Athena is at #3 as of September 26, six days before its pub date. The book has spent 142 days in the top 100 (compared to Vacancy's 83) and is already Amazon's #40 bestselling book of 2012, landing just ahead of Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris and George R.R. B&N Adds More U.K. Retailers
Barnes & Noble has announced partnerships with Dixons Retail, Sainsbury's, and Waitrose, expanding the reach of its Nook products in the U.K. Dixons is the owner of electronic retailers PC World and Currys and has over 600 outlets. The Sainsbury's partnership will see Nook products carried in over 270 stores, while Waitrose is a large supermarket chain in the U.K. more » »
Faber Announces Restructure
U.K-based Faber and Faber has announced a series of new appointments and a change of structure. Following the recent appointment of Leah Thaxton as publisher – children's, Julian Loose will take on the role of publisher- nonfiction and arts, and Hannah Griffiths the role of publisher - crime, paperbacks. She will also become associate publisher fiction, working closely with Stephen Page and Lee Brackstone to shape the fiction list. more » »

At BookExpo America, Maggie Donovan, who had been the conference coordinator on BEA and another Reed event (Global Gaming Expo or G2E) was promoted to conference manager. Mackenzie Lynch has joined BEA taking over as conference coordinator. 

At ICM, Kristyn Keene and Kari Stuart have been promoted to agent. Keene joined the agency in 2006; Stuart has been at ICM for seven years. more » »
