| B&N To Launch Nook Video Service In the Fall; Names Overseas Chief The competition between tablet manufacturers to offer both devices and content for them continues to heat up as Barnes & Noble announced plans to launch Nook Video, a new service offering big budget movies, classic films and TV shows available for viewing on Nook devices, TVs, tablets and smartphones. Nook Video will launch in the fall in the U.S. and the U.K., offering movies and TV shows for purchase or rental. Separately, the company appointed Patrick Rouvillois v-p, managing director-international. more » With the Frankfrut Book Fair just over two weeks away, some in the industry are feeling that it's a bit quiet on the deal-making front. Whether agents are waiting to announce their biggest deals closer to the fair (which starts on October 10), unveil their hottest goods during the three-day event, or the slow start bodes for a quiet show is still anyone's guess. In the meantime, some books are getting people talking. As we noted on Friday, a debut novel with a character loosely based on the lead singer of Bon Iver, Shotgun Lovesongs, has drawn some buzz. Also grabbing notice: the romance by Deborah McKinlay that recently sold to Grand Central, and a thriller called Girl With a Clock for a Heart that David Highfill at William Morrow just acquired. more » ADVERTISEMENT Permanent Press, Blackstone Audio Ink Deal The Permanent Press and Blackstone Audio have signed a deal which will result in all 14 novels set to be released by Permanent Press in 2013, also to be released in unabridged audio editions. The two independent companies have worked together in the past on individual titles, but this in the first time all Permanent Press frontlist titles will be available in all audio formats. more » Google announced that is rolling out a host of new features to the Google Play Books App, including a "translation" tool for readers "making their way through books in foreign languages." more »
OUP, Library Groups Strike Innovative Print/Digital Deal Oxford University Press has struck a deal with the Manhattan Research Library Initiative (MaRLI) and the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) that will deliver monograph content via its University Press Scholarship Online (UPSO) e-book program as well as a "shared collection" of print copies of all 2012 published scholarly works. Under the program, the affiliated institutions will have unlimited use and access to all new content added to UPSO in 2012, along with "a fiscally-viable plan" for purchasing one print copy of new scholarly books produced by the participating presses, through Yankee Book Peddler. more » » As of September 25, On Dublin Street by Samantha Young has spent 22 days in the Kindle top 100, many of them in the #1 spot. The book is a self-published erotica novel selling for $3.99 and is Young's debut into adult fiction--she has written 11 young adult novels. Young's agent, Lauren E. Abramo of Dystel & Goderich Literary Management, stated about On Dublin Street: "A number of publishers have expressed interest, and we’re currently exploring how we want to proceed." more » » Chris Labonté will leave his position as Douglas & McIntyre's fiction acquisitions editor at the end of the year to pursue his own writing and other endeavors. Labonté's departure prompted D&M to integrate acquisition and editing of fiction into the editorial department, led by publisher Trena White. more » » At Bloomsbury, Pete Beatty has been promoted to senior editor, moving over to the Bloomsbury imprint from Bloomsbury Press, where he's been working with Peter Ginna since 2008.
