Bookstore Sales Up Again in July
Bookstore sales rose 1.2% in July to $981 million, according to estimates released Friday morning by the U.S. Census Bureau. The July increase followed a 3.8% gain in June and resulted in a 0.6% increase in bookstore sales for the first seven months of 2012. In the January-July period, bookstore sales hit $7.96 billion. For the entire retail segment, July sales rose 3.0% and sales for the first seven months of 2012 were up 5.9%. more »
Burtenshaw Leaving the London Book Fair
Alistair Burtenshaw is stepping down from his position as director of books and publishing at Reed Business Information, a job which includes the post of director of the London Book Fair. A representative at the British public relations firm Midas Public Relations said he is leaving to "pursue opportunities in the wider creative industries." The Midas rep said that they intend to announce a successor to Burtenshaw "soon." more »

Tantor Media Adds Print, Expands E-books
While a number of companies are retreating from print books, Tantor Media will begin using the format for the first time this fall and will also expand its e-book business (Tantor did a soft e-book launch about a year ago). The large independent audiobook publisher will do 12 to 15 print books a year, using Ingram's Lightning Source print-on-demand service. Kevin Colebank, Tantor CEO, said the decision to enter the print field and to expand its e-book capabilities is part of a strategy to offer authors the opportunity to be published by Tantor in all three formats. more »
New Study: 55% of YA Books Bought by Adults
More than half the consumers of books classified for young adults aren't all that young. According to a new study, fully 55% of buyers of works that publishers designate for kids aged 12 to 17 -- nicknamed YA books -- are 18 or older, with the largest segment aged 30 to 44. Accounting for 28% of sales, these adults aren't just purchasing for others -- when asked about the intended recipient, they report that 78% of the time they are purchasing books for their own reading. The insights are courtesy of Understanding the Children's Book Consumer in the Digital Age, an ongoing biannual study from Bowker Market Research that explores the changing nature of publishing for kids. more »

In conjunction with a visit from Captain Underpants creator Dav Pilkey, Anderson's Bookshop hosted a special event to attempt to set a world record of people wearing underpants on their heads. Hundreds gathered on a beautiful September Saturday afternoon. And Pilkey played along, dressed likewise, with SpongeBob Squarepants briefs on his head.


Tracking Amazon: Kindle Charts Not Affected by New DoJ Pricing
After HarperCollins announced this week that they've reached new agreements with e-tailers as part of the DoJ settlement, the top of the Kindle bestsellers chart still has lots of agency-priced books, with four frontlist e-books priced $12.99 and up landing in the top 10 as of September 13. The four titles were No Easy Day, A Wanted Man by Lee Child, Gone Girl, and Delusion in Death by J.D. Robb. more »
