Marilyn Ducksworth Files Age Discrimination Suit Against Penguin
Marilyn Ducksworth, longtime director of corporate communications for Penguin Group USA, filed an age discrimination lawsuit on Wednesday afternoon in New York Supreme Court. Among the details in the complaint is the assertion that she was kept from helping to plan for the transition as Penguin CEO from David Shanks to CFO Coram Williams in January 2014. more »
Trade Sales Up in May
The trade segments had another good month in May, although rather than the children's/YA category leading the charge it was adult books where sales, helped by the Shades of Grey trilogy, rose 19.5%, according to AAP's Monthly StatShot figures. Within adult books, trade paperback sales were up 17.7%, while e-book sales increased 51.6%, to $106.4 million in May. For the first five months of 2012, e-book sales rose 31.7%, to $469.8 million at the companies reporting data to StatShot. more »

U.S. Attorneys Are Not Impressed By Bob Kohn's Comic Brief

Kobo Releases Upgraded Suite of Digital Reading Devices
Hot on the heels of its recent bookstore agreement with the American Booksellers Association, e-book retailer Kobo has released an upgraded suite of e-reading devices with new functionality and pricing, including the Kobo Arc, a new 7-inch multimedia tablet device starting at $200 that replaces the first Kobo tablet, the Kobo Vox. The new lineup of devices also includes the Kobo Glo, an e-ink device with built-in lighting, the 5-inch e-ink Kobo Mini for $80, and the Kobo Touch, an upgraded version of the original touch-screen e-ink device priced at $100. more »

HarperCollins Christian Publishing, comprising both recently acquired Thomas Nelson and Zondervan, has announced its leadership team. The team will report to Mark Schoenwald, president and CEO of HarperCollins Christian Publishing. Among those on the team are Stuart Bitting, senior v-p & CFO; Annette Bourland, senior v-p Zondervan Book Publishing; and David Moberg, senior v-p Thomas Nelson Book Publishing. 'Paterno' Sales Drop
After debuting at #1 on the adult frontlist nonfiction bestseller list, Joe Posnanski's Paterno has slipped to #7 in its second week, according to Nielsen BookScan. The biography sold 11,439 copies in its first week but dropped 42% to 6,623 copies this week. Last week, it was ranked around #150 on Amazon's bestseller list, and as of September 5, the book is holding steady at #162. more » »

Mets Pitcher Dickey Signs Children's Book Deal
R.A. Dickey, who pitches for the New York Mets, has signed a three-book deal with Penguin's Dial Books for Young Readers. Dickey is best known for throwing one of the rarer picthes in baseball: the knuckleball. His memoir, published by Penguin's Blue Rider Press and called Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity and the Perfect Knuckleball, hit stores in March. The first book in this deal, scheduled for fall 2013, will be a young readers adaptation of the memoir. more » »
Follett Sells Part of BWI to B&T
BWI, a Follett Corporation company that provides children's and YA books and audiovisual materials to public libraries, sold a portion of its assets to Baker & Taylor. The transaction was part of a strategic decision by the Follett School & Library Group to concentrate on the PreK-12 market. more » »
HarperCollins Launches Mystery Line Bourbon Street Books
HarperCollins has launched a new line of paperback mystery novels under the banner of Bourbon Street Books. The line will feature originals, reprints, backlist titles, and reissued classics all published as $14.99 trade paperbacks. Jonathan Burnham and Cal Morgan are overseeing Bourbon Street, part of the Harper Paperback imprint, but other HarperCollins editors will be acquiring books for the line. more » »
Film Exec Joining Hyperion In New West Coast Post
Laura Hopper is joining Hyperion in the newly created position of editorial director of franchise publishing. Hopper, who comes from the film/talent side of the entertainment business--she worked for United Talent Agency (UTA) before joining the motion picture department at Brillstein-Grey and, most recently, represented individual clients working on TV and film projects--will be based on the West Coast. Hyperion said her objective will be to "focus on identifying, developing, and editing new print and digital projects within the Disney/ABC Television Group for Hyperion's publishing program." more » »

Smart Summer Reads at Mysterious Galaxy
Mysterious Galaxy Redondo Beach celebrated the end of summer with a multi-author event. The Smart Summer reads program is an off-shoot of Ladies, Lunch and Literacy, an event created by Mysterious Galaxy's managing partner Terry Gilman. Attendees rotated through six "speed-dating" stations, with authors Anita Amirrezvani, Reyna Grande, Sandi Tan and Carol Quinn at four of the stations. Mysterious Galaxy's Terry Gilman and Simon & Schuster's Kelly Stidham discussed their favorite reads of the summer at their stations. Catalina Coffee & Café provided refreshments for attendees, who also received gifts from Simon & Schuster.
