| HarperCollins Reaches New E-book Agreements The final agreement in the Department of Justice's settlement with HarperCollins, Hachette Book Group, and Simon & Schuster gave the publishers 30 days to begin the process to reach new sales terms over e-books with its e-tailers. HarperCollins was the first to move, reaching deals with e-tailers that it said "are consistent with the final judgment." more » The three publisher plaintiffs in the Georgia State University e-reserve case yesterday lodged an appeal with the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, seeking to overturn one of the most significant fair use rulings in decades. The appeal comes after Judge Orinda Evans filed her final order for relief in the case, on August 10, rejecting the plaintiff publishers' sweeping proposal for relief and ordering the publishers to pay the defendants' attorneys' costs. more » ADVERTISEMENT New Report on Digital Publishing Startups From BlueLoop Concepts Compiled by BlueLoop Concepts, a research and consulting firm focused on the digital and mobile media markets, "The E-Book Platform Landscape" is a newly released, concise report on the growth of digital publishing, the ever-increasing number of digital startups and the market trends surrounding them. ComicsAccelerator is the company's new crowdfunding play, a whole new platform for raising money specifically for comics-based projects. more » Leigh Haber has been appointed books editor at O, The Oprah Magazine, and will assume the role beginning September 17. Most recently, she was editor-at-large at Chronicle Books and consultant to the publishing-on-demand platform Blurb. She has held editorial roles at Scribner, Hyperion, and Rodale. Haber is replacing Sara Nelson, who went to Amazon in May 2012. more »
Feminist Press Lands Pussy Riot E-book The nonprofit, indie Feminist Press will be publishing the first e-book about the Russian punk band, Pussy Riot. Three members of the group, who have become an international symbol of protest and the fight for free speech, were charged with hooliganism after giving an anti-government performance in Moscow in February. Feminist Press's e-book, Pussy Riot! A Punk Prayer for Freedom, is slated to be available at various e-tailers in two weeks, and collects material from the trial, as well as tributes from figures like Yoko Ono and Eileen Myles. more » » Roger D. Hodge has been named the second editor in the 20-year history of The Oxford American, succeeding Marc Smirnoff, who was fired July 15 amid a sexual harassment accusation.
