| SIBA Kicks Off the Regional Trade Show Season and ABA's Kobo Road Show The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance's September 7-9 annual meeting held in Naples, Fla., kicked off not only the regional fall trade show season, but the American Booksellers Association's road show. The road show's goal? To convince ABA's members of the benefits of signing up for the association's recently announced agreement with Kobo under which member stores can sell Kobo devices and digital content. more » Results were slightly weaker than expected in the first quarter of fiscal 2013 at John Wiley, but company executives still expect to meet full year forecasts, company CEO Steve Smith said. For the quarter ended July 31, revenue fell 4%, to $411 million and net income fell 29%, to $36.1 million. Results were hurt by foreign exchange (excluding foreign exchange sales were off 2%), timing in Wiley's journal business and softness in the higher education market. Earnings reflect a $4.8 million charge tied to severance costs associated with Wiley's plan to discontinue, outsource, or relocate certain functions due to the ongoing transformation of Wiley to a more digitally oriented company. more » ADVERTISEMENT Berkley Launching Graphic Novel Imprint, InkLit Penguin's Berkley/NAL division is starting a graphic novel line called InkLit which will do original titles as well as graphic adaptations of already-published prose works. InkLit will launch on October 2 with the release of Patricia Briggs's Alpha and Omega: Volume 1. Richard Johnson, who co-founded Yen Press and is a former v-p of trade book sales at DC Comics, will be overseeing the new imprint. more » In separate amicus briefs filed with the Supreme Court last week, both the Association of American Publishers, and the Software and Information Industry Association argue that the doctrine of first sale does not apply to foreign-made works. The briefs, filed in connection with the case Kirtsaeng v. Wiley & Sons, support a 2011 Second Circuit Court of Appeals decision which held that the doctrine of first sale, the provision which allows a legal purchaser of a copyrighted work to re-sell or share that copy, applies only to copies manufactured in the United States. That principle, AAP officials say, was correctly articulated by the appeals court, and overturning it would pave the way for domestic markets to be "superseded by lower-priced copies created for and previously sold in foreign markets," to be "collected and resold en masse in the U.S." more »
Black Dog & Leventhal Launches Bookseller Contest with ABA To celebrate the publication of My Bookstore (Nov.), a collection of more than 80 essays by writers about their favorite indie bookstores, edited by Ronald Rice, Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers is launching a contest on "Why My Bookstore Matters" in conjunction with the ABA. Tracking Amazon: Kindle Bestsellers Are Big Names & Low Prices Unlike the bestselling print titles, which are almost exclusively big names, the bestselling Kindle titles are an even mix of bestselling names and low-priced titles. The average price for a top 25 Kindle bestseller is $5.98 (compared to $13.67 for print), and 13 out of the top 25 have prices under $5.00. Only three titles in the Kindle's top 25 (as of September 10) had prices exceeding $10.00 (No Easy Day, Gone Girl, and The Light Between Oceans), compared to 16 titles in the print top 25. more » | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
