'No Easy Day' Tops the Charts

September 13, 2012
'No Easy Day' Sees Huge Sales, Topples 50 Shades
No Easy Day sold 253,000 copies in its first week on sale at outlets tracked by Nielsen BookScan. The numbers were more than enough to place it at #1 on the overall bestsellers list--it sold nearly three times as many copies as Fifty Shades of Grey, the #2 overall book with 86,000 copies sold. No Easy Day's #1 ranking makes it the first time since the week ending April 22 that E.L. James's book was not #1. more »

Tracking Amazon: HarperCollins Explores New E Prices
HarperCollins announced earlier this week that it had reached new sales terms with its e-tailers, and by September 13 nearly all HC e-books had been dropped to $9.99 across all platforms (including new titles like Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon, which went from $18.99 to $9.99 on the iBookstore over the course of this week). The lower prices haven't resulted in HC titles sweeping onto the Kindle top 10 bestsellers list: Solo: A Memoir of Hope by Hope Solo was ranked #1,403; The Fallen Angel by Daniel Silva was ranked #131; Telegraph Avenue was ranked #44. more »

THE ROUNDUP

Best Things About Working in Publishing: Including summer hours and reading on the job.
Stop Comparing 'The Wire' to Dickens: "'The Wire' is like a Victorian novel" — this facile, cocktail-party insight has been cropping up a lot lately, although it's hard to see why someone who truly loves both the HBO series about life and crime in contemporary Baltimore and the fiction of 19th-century England would insist upon it.
Bertelsmann 'Lacks Growth' in U.S.: Thomas Rabe is pushing for change, arguing that the German media conglomerate does "not have all the skills required" to benefit from the digital age.
How Book Clubs Went Indie: Small, intimate but far-reaching online-based book clubs have been popping up everywhere, and their success shows the benefits—and drawbacks—of a changing publishing landscape.
'Long Distance Runner' Goes to Stage: Alan Sillitoe's short story gets an adaptation for the stage.
