B&N Customers Suffer Identity Theft Scheme
Barnes & Noble has been hacked. The retailer said that there was "tampering with PIN pad devices" in 63 of its stores, all related to "one compromised PIN pad" in each location. In reaction to the tampering, B&N said it has stopped using the pads in all 700 of its stores. more »
Self-Publishing Sees Triple-Digit Growth Since 2007
The number of self-published books produced annually in the U.S. has nearly tripled, growing 287% since 2006, with 235,625 print and e titles released in 2011, according to a new analysis of data from Bowker. The research found that while production increases are occurring in both print and e-book formats, the latter is driving the greatest percentage gains. more »

Harlequin Motion Seeks Dismissal of Class Action Lawsuit
Attorneys for Harlequin have filed a motion to dismiss the class action lawsuit filed this summer by three authors who charged that they had not received full royalties on e-books for works that were originally signed between 1990 and 2004. The motion, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, argues that the authors were paid for the sale of the digital editions of their work precisely in the manner laid out in their publishing agreements. more »
Apple Unveils $329 iPad Mini
At a live-streamed press event held Tuesday at the California Theatre in San Jose, California, Apple unveiled a $329 miniature version of its popular iPad tablet. The iPad mini has a 7.9 inch screen (diagonally), and is basically equivalent in power and features to Apple's iPad 2, the second-generation iPad released in 2011. The device, which comes in both black and white, fits easily in one hand and in a pocket or purse. more »

Atwood, Alderman Team Up to Publish Zombie Serial on Wattpad
In another effort to update the conventional serial work, Wattpad, the online writing community, is publishing The Happy Zombie Sunrise Home, a collaborative work of fiction produced by acclaimed Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood and emerging U.K.-based author Naomi Alderman, who wrote alternating chapters of the comic zombie novel. The story can be read for free on Wattpad, which will post the first three chapters of the 13-chapter story today and will post new chapters each Wednesday until the story is finished in January. more » »
Amazon Introduces Japanese Kindle Store and Kindle Paperwhite
Amazon.co.jp has announced the Kindle Paperwhite is heading to Japan, shipping on November 19 and selling for ¥12,980. To coincide with the release, the Kindle Store on Amazon.co.jp will launch October 25 with over 50,000 Japanese-language Kindle books including over 10,000 free Japanese titles.
