Bookstore Sales Dipped in August
Bookstore sales dipped less than 1% in August, falling to $2.38 billion from $2.40 billion in August 2011, according to preliminary estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. For the first eight months of 2012 sales were virtually flat with the comparable period in 2011 at $10.3 billion. more »
Optimism at Pacific Northwest
Despite financial concerns about the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association, which have been bubbling up since last year's annual meeting when the organization announced that it faced a five-figure loss for the year, there was a surprising amount of optimism at this year's annual trade show. Moved to the weekend, the three-day show (Saturday through Monday Oct. 13-15) was back in Tacoma for the first time in a decade at the Hotel Murano, where it got high ratings from booksellers and vendors. more »

Educational Development Corp. Posts Modest Gains
Sales for the second quarter ended August 31 inched up at Educational Development Corp. from $5.4 million to $5.5 million, while net income rose to $138,200 from $126,200 in the comparable period in 2011. The sales increase was due to a 10% gain in EDC's publishing division that offset declines in its UBAM division. more »

Obituary: Larry Sloan, 89
Book publisher Larry Sloan, best known for the "non-book" and humor titles from Price Stern Sloan, the press he co-founded with comedy writers Leonard Stern and Roger Price in 1953, died in Los Angeles on October 14. He was 89. After Stern and Price created the self-published Mad Libs humor series Sloan, a publicist and old high school friend of Stern's, became a partner in what would become Price Stern Sloan. The company grew into the largest publisher on the west coast at the time, with Sloan's The Elephant Book, The World's Worst Jokes series, and Droodles joining the PSS backlist of perennial bestsellers such as How to Be a Jewish Mother and over 70 Mad Libs titles. more » »

Schulte Tribute Set for October 30
A tribute to Tony Schulte has been set for 5:30 on October 30 at The Quaker Meeting House, 15 Rutherford Place, in New York City. The former Simon & Schuster and Knopf executive died in June at age 82. After a formal program, time will be set aside for remarks from friends and colleagues. more »
