| Google, Publishers Settle Lawsuit over Book Scanning It's over—at least for publishers. The Association of American Publishers and Google today announced they have settled their long-running litigation over Google's library book scanning. According to a statement from the AAP, in the settlement Google is said to "acknowledge the rights and interests of copyright-holders," and U.S. publishers can "choose to make available or choose to remove their books and journals digitized by Google for its Library Project." But the settlement of publishers claims does not settle the class action suit filed by the Authors Guild, which Guild executive director Paul Aiken confirmed, continues. more » Barnes & Noble and Microsoft have finalized their partnership agreement that has created Nook Media, a B&N subsidiary in which Microsoft will hold a 17.6% stake. Nook Media, which did not have a formal name until today, will be comprised of B&N's digital businesses as well as its college stores, and, according to B&N will have a "mutually beneficial relationship with Barnes & Noble's retail stores." more » ADVERTISEMENT Hachette Realigns Sales Structure Hachette Book Group executive v-p and chief marketing officer Evan Schnittman has realigned the publisher's sales force, a move the includes the hiring of David Bowers to the new role of senior v-p of sales strategy & operations and the promotion of Chris Murphy to senior v-p of the newly created retail sales department that now includes five sub-departments: National Accounts, CBA, Clients and Nashville, Young Reader Sales, & National Field Force. more » After a quiet build-up to the Frankfurt Book Fair, a book that Reagan Arthur pre-empted has people buzzing. With the fair days away--it opens on October 10--Arthur, for her eponymous imprint at Little, Brown, bought U.S. rights to Sarah Lotz's thriller, The Three, from Hodder & Stoughton in the U.K. The novel, which Hodder is publishing in February 2014, and which RA will release in spring 2014, has also sold in Italy and France. more » In an acquisition that brings together two Penguin imprints, Berkley Books and Penguin Young Readers Group have jointly acquired Tammara Webber's self-published novel Easy. Because the novel has a crossover readership covering teens and adult romance readers, the imprints teamed up to acquire print and e-book rights. Penguin will take over sale of the e-book on October 9 and Berkley will release a trade paperback edition on November 6. more »
Diesel Bookstore Plans 4th California Location in Spring 2013 With stores already established in Malibu, Brentwood, and Oakland, Diesel co-owner John Evans has announced a fourth location that will open in Larkspur, California in the spring of 2013. The new Diesel outlet will be in the Marin Country Mart that was previously know as Larkspur Landing when A Clean Well-Lighted Place For Books had a store there. A Clean Well-Lighted Place closed in 2006. more » » Crown Publishing has named Campbell Wharton, who was publicity director for Crown paperbacks and Crown Forum and worked with the Speakers Bureau, associate publisher of Three Rivers Press and Crown Forum. She will report to Mauro DiPreta, v-p and editor-in-chief. With her promotion Crown has made other changes, including hiring Wade Lucas as agent director of the Random House Speakers Bureau; he will report to publicity director David Drake. The American Booksellers Association's first Events Specialty Institute drew approximately 90 booksellers from throughout the country to Minneapolis Wednesday, where they heard from veteran booksellers and publishing executives on how to create successful events, both in the store and off-site.
