Google Scanning is Fair Use Says Judge
In a major ruling, Federal judge Harold Baer this week tossed the Authors Guild case against the HathiTrust. In granting the HathiTrust's motion for summary judgment, Baer ruled that that the scan program was a clear fair use under the the copyright law. more »
Nook Tablet Pre-Orders Sky High, Lynch Tells Investors
At a Wednesday afternoon Liberty Media investor conference Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch said that pre-orders for the new Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets were running 240% higher than previous Nook launches. He also said that the Nook Bookstore would be in 10 countries by next June. As for its retail stores, Lynch said a study found that B&N accounts for 64% of all shelf space in the country for print books. more »

Big Books in Frankfurt: A French Novel, More Erotica and Nuclear Warheads
A literary French novel and, just possibly, a new E.L. James, were headlining conversations at this year's Frankfurt Book Fair.

The book that might soon earn the tagline the 'Canadian Fifty Shades of Grey' is called S.E.C.R.E.T., written (pseudonomously, of course) by a Canadian TV producer and bestselling novelist going by the name E.M. Adeline. Molly Stern and Alexis Washam at Crown preempted U.S. rights in a two-book deal for Crown's Broadway imprint. more »

Riordan, O'Reilly Post Huge Debuts
Rick Riordan's The Mark of Athena was the #1 bestseller by a wide margin for the week ending October 7, according to Nielsen BookScan. The book sold 240,000 copies, more than double the #2 bestseller, Killing Kennedy by Bill O'Reilly, which sold 118,000 copies in its first week. more »

Mo Yan Wins Nobel for Literature
Chinese writer Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize for Literature today. Yan's work, which has been banned in China, was praised by the awarding committee for its "hallucinatory realism." PW has reviewed five of his novels (two were awarded stars) and said that "If China has a Kafka, it may be Mo Yan" and called Yan "one of China's most important contemporary writers." Amazon has launched a new "Author Rank" feature on its site. The new ranking is based on cumulative sales of all books by each author and like its ranking of bestselling books will be updated hourly.
