'High Energy' at New Atlantic Booksellers Conference
This year's New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association Fall Conference (Sept. 28-30), focused on getting noticed, and it definitely stood out as one of the organization's strongest shows in several years. Whether it was the shift from Atlantic City to Greater Washington; the presence of so many booksellers with newly opened stores or those contemplating them, most booksellers and sales representatives commented on the "high energy" all weekend long. Attendance was up as are booksellers' sales, which also contributed to an upbeat show. more »
BISG Panelists: More Change Coming
Speakers on a panel of industry leaders at Friday's annual meeting of the Book Industry Study Group agreed that the publishing industry is in for much more change. "I expect there to be more dramatic, disruptive change ahead," said Sourcebooks CEO Dominique Raccah. Tom Turvey, director of strategic partnerships for Google, said he believes the industry "is not close to what it will look like five years from now." more »

Quarto Board Sets Meeting For November 7; Backs Orbach
Responding to demands from two shareholders to call a special meeting to vote on replacing Quarto CEO Laurence Orbach, the board of the U.K-based publisher has set the meeting for November 7. At the same time, the board reiterated that it is firmly against the proposal and urged shareholder to vote against the resolution. more »
Tracking Amazon: Riordan Topples Rowling
The Casual Vacancy has been knocked off its perch atop Amazon's bestseller list, falling to #2 behind Rick Riordan's The Mark of Athena. Riordan's book, which comes out October 2, has a 3.5 million-copy first printing in the U.S., while The Casual Vacancy has a 2 million-copy run. More astounding: social reads Website Goodreads tweeted on September 28 that The Casual Vacancy broke the record for all-time biggest "started reading" day for a book on Goodreads on September 27, the book's pub date. more »
Glitches Aside, B&N Insists It Is Not Carrying Amazon Titles
After PW reported that Barnes & Noble would not be carrying books from Amazon Publishing, a report has surfaced that the retailer seems to be selling titles from the publishing imprint, at least at one documented location. PW has reached out to B&N to find out why Penny Marshall's book, My Mother Was Nuts, which was acquired by Amazon and distributed to retailers by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's New Harvest imprint (which has a deal with Amazon); a representative for the company said B&N is not selling Amazon titles and would return with a comment on why these titles are on the retailer's shelves. more »

Shana Smith has been named the associate editor for Love Inspired at Harlequin. Smith was previously an assistant editor at Harlequin since January 2011.

Shelby Meizlik has been promoted to group publicity director, overseeing publicity for all of the Morrow and Avon imprints and formats. She has been with HarperCollins since 1998.

Barnes & Noble's NOOK Simple Touch with Glowlight is now $119, a price drop from $139.
