BookShout Addition Lets Readers Import E-Books from Any Platform
BookShout, a social reading and book retail application, is introducing new technology that will allow its users to legally import their previous and future e-book purchases into their BookShout account, free of charge, no matter where they were purchased. Writers Groups Want Publisher-Google Terms Made Public
The American Society of Journalists and Authors, the National Writers Union, and Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America have asked the Department of Justice to review last week's settlement between the AAP and Google that ended the publishers' seven-year copyright fight with the giant company. Most of the details in the agreement are confidential and the three organizations, worried that the settlement could hurt authors' rights by selling copyrighted books illegally, said they want the DoJ to see if the deal may violate antitrust laws. The organizations are calling on publishers and Google to make all the settlement terms public. more »
Busy Kobo To Acquire Aquafadas, Raise Self-pub Royalty and More
After launching a self-publishing platform this summer, e-book retailer Kobo has enlarged its publishing portfolio again after agreeing to acquire Aquafadas, a digital publishing platform that allows publishers to easily and economically build multimedia apps for children's books, comics, magazines, and newspapers without using a programmer. The e-tailer also announced at the Frankfurt Book Fair that Writing Life, is self-publishing platform will increase its royalty by 10% to any writer signing on between now and December and is expanding the number of languages the service will support. more »

Improved Sales Make for Good New England Show
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that strong sales in the run up to the fall regionals lead to good trade shows and the New England Independent Booksellers Association's 39th annual fall conference held at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence from October 3-5 was no exception. "The show's been very, very good. Booksellers are just feeling good about the fall," says Penguin Group sales representative Karl Krueger. Big accounts like New England Mobile Book Fair were back in full force and so were big name writers, including Junot Diaz, Wally Lamb and Dennis Lehane. more »
E-books Grab 16% Share of Canadian Book Purchases
E-books accounted for about 16% of Canadian book purchases in the first half of 2012, a new survey commissioned by BookNet Canada found. According to the report, "The Canadian Book Consumer 2012: Book-Buying Behaviour in Canada January to June 2012," the most popular format in the period was paperback, which accounted for 57% of sales, while hardcovers represented 24% of unit sales. more »

Quercus to Expand in U.S.
Quercus, the London-based publisher whose roster of international successes includes Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy, is poised to launch a U.S. publishing operation and has established a New York office in preparation for its debut lists set for autumn 2013. Gadsby to Head New International Division at Rowman & Littlefield
Rowan & Littlefield Publishing Group has hired former Continuum CEO Oliver Gadsby to head a new international academic publishing division. Roman & Littlefield International will be based in London and will acquire titles in the humanities and social sciences categories for not just the U.K. and European markets but for all markets outside of the U.S., Gadsby said. Gadsby told PW that he is starting to recruit a small team for the London office and that he expects to release the company's first books in the third quarter of 2013. more » »

Obituary: Elizabeth A. Geiser
Elizabeth A. Geiser, publishing executive and educator, died on October 8 at her home in Florida. One of the founders of the University of Denver Publishing Institute in 1976, Geiser also served as senior v-p of the book division of R.R.
