Random House, Penguin Agree to Merge
In a deal that had been months in the making, Pearson and Bertelsmann announced Monday morning that they have signed an agreement to form a joint venture that will combine the businesses of Random House and Penguin. The deal, which is expected to close in the second half of 2013, will make Penguin Group chairman John Makinson chairman of the newly named Penguin Random House company, while Random House chairman and CEO Markus Dohle will be CEO. more »
Dohle Addresses Booksellers, Authors and Agents About Merger
CEO of Random House, Markus Dohle, has sent three letters--to booksellers, authors and agents--addressing the momentous news about his publishing company merging with Penguin. The letters, intended to offer elaboration on the merger, the possibility of which sent shock waves through the industry last week, are also intended to calm three of the house's publishing partners, who are no doubt concerned about what the future will now hold. more »

B&N's E-Ink Devices Go On Sale in U.K. Today
In a move that puts Barnes & Noble on the path to becoming an international content and technology provider, the retailer began selling its Nook Simple Touch (£79) and Nook Simple Glow-Light (£109) e-ink reading devices today at more than 1,600 retail outlets in the U.K. B&N also launched a British Nook Store offering access to millions of e-books and moved to raise its brand awareness in the U.K. with a "Read in Bed" advertising campaign to highlight the Nook Glow-light's night-light technology. more »

Hachette's Second Gallery Project
Hachette Book Group hosted its second annual Gallery Project opening last week, featuring the work of 21 employees who accepted the challenge to create three pieces of art in six months. The artists — who come from HBG's design, editorial, production, IT, human resources, audio, digital, and facilities departments — created an exciting array of works including photography, oil paintings, sculpture, drawings, illustrations, and clothing. The event was chaired by Kirk Benshoff and Adam Goldberg.
