| Book Comps Fell 1.4% at Hastings in Quarter Book comp sales fell 1.4% at Hastings Entertainment for the third quarter ended October 31, while total store revenue declined 6.7%, to $101.3 million, and the net loss increased to $8.0 million from $5.5 million in the comparable period in 2011. "Our revenues continue to be impacted by the increasing popularity of digital delivery, rental kiosks and subscription-based services," said CEO John Marmaduke in a statement. more » The different purposes of digital vs. print kept coming up during a panel on adapting cookbooks for the digital age, held as part of PW's Discussion Series. The Put Me in the Story book platform, which has a patent pending, personalizes interactive picture books for children by allowing consumers to insert a child's name and photographed image into the app, thus fully integrating the child into the story line. more » It's not just the owners of brick-and-mortar bookstores who are retiring. Sharon Preiss, who founded Mobile Libris in New York City seven years ago to sell books for publishers and authors at events, is the latest to put her business on the market. Currently, Mobile Libris handles 50 or more events a week. In an e-mail blast to clients, Preiss noted that she will handle all December events and all events that were postponed by Hurricane Sandy that were rescheduled for this year. Distribution: O'Reilly and Wiley Agree O'Reilly has signed a deal with John Wiley & Sons to become an online distributor for their technology e-books. O'Reilly's Website offers over 3,000 Wiley tech titles, all of which are DRM-free and available in multiple formats. The agreement includes nine Wiley imprints, including the Wrox, Sybex, and For Dummies brands. more » » David Highfill has been named v-p and executive editor at William Morrow. Last week, Parnassus Books celebrated their one-year anniversary. Co-owners Ann Patchett (right) and Karen Hayes (left) opened the doors to all who supported and contributed to their first year's success. A steady stream of authors, readers, and local patrons filled the newly expanded 3,150 sq ft space throughout the night.
