| "Wild and wonderful" is the way Carol Chittenden, owner of Eight Cousins in Falmouth, Mass., describes the first weekend of the holiday selling season. "Dollars were up 12%, average purchases were up 5%, and the number of customers were up 6%. People were happy to be here." She is among two dozen booksellers who participated in PW's informal survey of indies around the country. Based on their results it looks like most stores could match or exceed last year's figures, which in the wake of Borders closing were particularly strong. more » Simon & Schuster is getting in the self-publishing business. Through a partnership with Author Solutions Inc., S&S has formed Archway Publishing, a unit that will offer self-publishing services in fiction, nonfiction, business and children's categories with the backend powered by ASI, the self-publishing provider acquired by Pearson/Penguin earlier this year. more » Nubia Macias, director of FIL (the Guadalajara Book Fair), the largest Spanish-language book fair in the world, sat with PW to discuss the U.S. participation at this year's show. Macias, who has been director since 2003, is the face of FIL in Mexico and around the world. With over 2,000 publishers participating this year--a figure up notably from last year--the focus has been Latin America. Another change is that FIL, known as a Spanish-language book fair, has placed a greater emphasis on the participation of countries where Spanish is not the native language. It has also been trying to lure more authors, and not just publishers, to the fair. more » Paige Crutcher has been named Publishers Weekly's southern correspondent. Holiday Children's Art Auction Opens on eBay The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) is launching today an online auction of original children's art by 50 of the book industry's leading artists and illustrators, including Marla Frazee, Barbara McClintock, Chris Raschka, and Adam Rex. more » » Judy Rosenblatt, a long-time member of the Hachette Book Group sales team, died this past weekend of ovarian cancer. Most recently, Rosenblatt was senior national accounts manager working with Barnes & Noble. In 2010, she won B&N's Rep of the Year award. Anne Davis, chief financial officer of Random House worldwide, died November 26 after a battle with cancer. She was 50. Davis joined Random House in 1995 as assistant controller and was named CFO in 2007. more » » Anna deVries has been named senior editor at Picador. She has been in publishing for over 10 years, including seven years in the editorial department at Scribner. Julia Pastore has joined Demos Health as executive editor where she will help grow their list of trade health and self-help titles. Amazon Lists Holiday Sales Milestones
Amazon announced a number of "milestones" this morning for early holiday sales that featured the success of the Kindle family. Among them: Cyber Monday was the biggest day ever for Kindle sales worldwide; the top 4 spots on the worldwide Amazon best sellers list since launch nearly three months ago are Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fires; and 9 out of the top 10 bestselling products on Amazon worldwide since September 6 are Kindles, Kindle accessories and digital content. more »
