| McGraw-Hill Education to be Acquired by Private Equity Firm Apollo After a year-long process, McGraw-Hill Cos. has agreed to sell McGraw-Hill Education to the private equity group Apollo Global Management for $2.5 billion. MHC hopes to complete the deal before the end of the year or in early 2013. After the purchase is completed, the education group will be known as McGraw-Hill Education under the direction of Buzz Waterhouse, who was named CEO and president in June. more » Cyber Monday is extending to books, with sales at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Kobo, Apple, and others competing for holiday dollars. more » ADVERTISEMENT Guadalajara Book Fair Starts Run The growth and importance of Spanish-language publishing is evident at its most important literary event, Feria internacional del Libro, Guadalajara's book fair. Running from November 24 to December 2, with Chile the guest of honor, the statistics are impressive: 1,900 publishers from 40 countries; 600,000 visitors; and over 100 "tables" in the rights center. more » Hurricane Sandy is just one of several set backs that Chris Jones and his wife, Gina Holmes, have had to overcome on the road to opening Monte Cristo Bookshop in New London, Ct., which they regard as the cultural center of Southeastern Connecticut. The storm hit just when they were about to install electricity in the space, which they then had to put on hold for two weeks. Earlier in the year when family money that had been promised to them to start the store fell through, the two turned to Indiegogo. Now Jones prefers not to give a firm opening date. But it could be as early as December 1, if everything works out as re-planned. more »
Quebec Writers' Federation Honors the Best The Quebec Writers' Federation (QWF) celebrated the best in Quebec English-language literature at its annual gala November 20. Part fĂȘte, part opportunity for all the Quebec writers, publishers, and translators to get together and raise a glass to their year-long efforts, the QWF Literary Awards Gala is "the best award ceremony in Canada," according to Taras Grescoe, winner of the Mavis Gallant Prize for Nonfiction for his latest book, Straphanger: Saving Our Cities and Ourselves from the Automobile. more » » In just two and a half weeks author Kieran Scott, who penned the Private series as Kate Brian, has received commitments from more than 170 young adult and middle-grade authors for a YA for NJ benefit auction, hosted by eBay Giving Works, to fill the coffers of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. more » » Actress Deborah Raffin, who teamed with her husband Michael Viner in the mid-1980's to start Dove Books-on-Tape, died in Los Angeles late last week. HC Launches HarperTeen Impulse: The young adult category is perhaps the hottest market in publishing, so it is no surprise that industry executives are looking for every possible entry point.
