Third Quarter Sales Down 5% at Simon & Schuster But Earnings Rise
Sales for the third quarter ended September 30 fell 5% at Simon & Schuster, to $210 million, but operating income before depreciation and amortization rose to $39 million from $38 million in the 2011 comparable quarter, parent company CBS reported. Digital sales rose 20% in the quarter, but were offset by lower sales of print titles, though the higher percentage of digital sales helped to increase profits. more »
Leaver Asks Quarto Stakeholders to Unite and Move Forward
Following the shareholder vote that replaced Quarto Group cofounder and chief executive Laurence Orbach with Tim Chadwick, Quarto president and COO Marcus Leaver sent a letter to employees and other Quarto stakeholders urging all parties to unite behind him and the senior management team "as we seek to put this bruising and very public encounter behind us." His vision for Quarto, Leaver said, is a company "that will focus on the best elements of its businesses and reshape accordingly for the future." more »

Crown Launching New Religion Imprint
Random House's Crown Publishing Group is launching a new religion imprint, Convergent Books, which will be headed by Stephen Cobb. "Convergent will explore the contemporary faith experience for a broad range of Christians who are drawn to an open, inclusive, and culturally engaged exploration of faith," the publisher states. DC Adds Nook, Kindle and iBookstore for Digital Comics
DC Comics has just made their periodical comics available in digital form on the Kindle Store, iBookstore and Nook Store, becoming the first major comics publisher to make their weekly releases available on every major digital platform. more »
Ruckus Reader Adds New Titles
Ruckus Media, a multimedia children's entertainment developer, is adding digital titles from five children's publishers to its Ruckus Reader app, a digital bookshelf, retail outlet and early reader learning platform. The company is adding titles from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, All About Kids, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, Thomas Nelson and Charlesbridge Publishing, and also plans to release Ruckus 2.0, a revamped version of the Ruckus Reader App, in late November. more »

World Book Night Names Titles for 2013 Event
World Book Night has announced its list of picks for its 2013 World Book Night U.S., as well its new honorary chairpeople, Ann Patchett and James Patterson. The organization, which aims to encourage reading, selected the 30 titles for its annual event through a process relying on the selections of independent booksellers and librarians. Obituary: Bob Silverstein
Bob Silverstein, president of Quicksilver Books Literary Agency and part of the New York literary world for almost fifty years, died last Saturday at the age of 76. Silverstein's agency, a former book packaging and publishing firm, was behind the bestsellers Last Tango in Paris, Chariots of Fire, Nice Girls Don't Get The Corner Office, and Children Learn What They Live, among many others. more » »

Tracking Amazon: Nate Silver Can't Top Wimpy Kid
Despite all of the attention Nate Silver has received since correctly predicting the 2012 election, his book, The Signal and the Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail--but Some Don't, couldn't top Jeff Kinney's The Third Wheel, which is still Amazon's #1 bestseller. Silver's book climbed to #2 two days after the election (#19 on Kindle) and has spent 52 days in the top 100 (and, as of November 8, Amazon's site says the book will be available November 11), but Kinney's new Wimpy Kid book has now spent 144 days in the top 100. It publishes on November 13 from Amulet Books. more »
