August Adult Trade Sales Rose 11%
Sales in the adult trade segment rose 11.0% in August, according to the newest figures released in AAP's monthly StatShot program. The biggest surprise in the month was an increase in sales of mass market paperbacks; helped by a 31.6% decline in returns, sales in the format rose 17.2% in August, although sales for the first eight months of 2012 were down 16.3%. E-book sales rose 34.2% in August, to $118.6 million, close to the 36.9% growth rate for the first eight months of the year. For the first eight months of 2012, sales for the entire adult trade segment were up 10.4%. more »
Robert Thomson Named CEO of News Corp. Publishing Group
News Corp. confirmed Monday morning that Robert Thomson, Dow Jones editor-in-chief and managing editor of The Wall Street Journal since 2008, will become the CEO of the new publishing entity that News Corp. is spinning off from its entertainment assets next year. The new company will retain the News Corp. name (the entertainment company is being renamed Fox Group), and will include HarperCollins, all newspaper assets, its new education company plus some Australian broadcasting businesses. more »
Appeal Filings Outline Authors Guild's Objections to HathiTrust Opinion
With a new round of filings hitting the docket last week, the Authors Guild appeal of Judge Harold Baer's landmark copyright decision is underway. The broad appeal raises a handful of key questions on which the Guild is seeking review by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, including whether the district court erred in finding the scan plan to be fair use. more »
Koontz Signs Six-Book Deal at Random House
Dean Koontz is extending his relationship with his current publisher, Random House's Ballantine Bantam Dell imprint, signing to do six more novels with the imprint. Koontz inked a North American rights deal with president and publisher of RHPG, Gina Centrello, and his longtime editor, Tracy Devine, will continue to work on his fiction. Among the six signed books, one will be the final title in the author's Odd Thomas series (called Deeply Odd), while another will feature Koontz's recurring central character, Christopher Snow. more »

Launched with $34,000 in grants, Symbolia: The Tablet Magazine of Illustrated Journalism, a digital journal designed for the iPad that specializes in comics and illustrated nonfiction reports, debuts today in the app store.
