| Hachette Updates Environmetal Progress In its annual report on the progress it has made in hitting various environmental goals, Hachette Book Group said today that it is ahead of pace in two key areas but behind in a third. HBG has already surpassed its target for reducing total greenhouse gas emissions as well as for the use of Forest Stewardship Council paper, but is behind its goal in increasing the use of recycled paper. more » With the David Petraeus-Paula Broadwell debacle as a backdrop, on December 10, The Leon Levy Center for Biography at the CUNY Graduate Center hosted a discussion on the ethics of biography, namely, the multiform ways in which a biographer is morally accountable to his or her subject. more » With John Wiley having sold the largest, and most valuable, properties of its consumer publishing program to Google and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the company is likely to close down the remaining businesses by the end of its fiscal year in April if no deals can be reached, executives told analysts in a conference call discussing second quarter results. CEO Steve Smith said that Wiley is still in conversations with potential acquirers, but is "well prepared" to wind down the businesses if no transactions can be completed. more » App Business Baker & Taylor imprint Silver Dolphin Books plans to release six educational apps for the iOS and Android platforms in 2013, including two each based on Mercer Mayer's Little Critter and Richard Scarry's Busytown characters, for which it recently acquired nonexclusive digital rights. It also will release two titles based on an original property, Astro B-1. more » Simon & Schuster has acquired North American rights to Hugh Howey's self-published science fiction series, Wool. Karyn Marcus took North American rights in the deal from Kristin Nelson, at Nelson Literary. Howey gained notoriety for building an audience on his own for the e-books, and initially turned down traditional deals. The series has also been optioned been optioned by 20th Century Fox. Byliner and Ingram Partner Byliner has selected Ingram to print and distribute editions of Byliner's e-books beginning in January 2013. Tracking Amazon: Thomas & Mercer Cracks Top 10 The shift of three publishers to "new e-book agreements" hasn't affected Amazon's bestselling Kindle list since the migration began--in fact, on December 12, it was a Thomas & Mercer title that made the biggest splash. The Shadow Hunter by Michael Prescott jumped to #2 from #2,095. The rest of the top 10 was the same from December 11. The paperback edition of Prescott's novel is #150,632 and is priced at $8.97, compared to the Kindle edition's $4.99 price tag. more » | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
