| HarperCollins Results Fell in Fiscal 2012 As it prepares to spin off its publishing, education and Australian broadcasting and cable assets into a separate company, News Corp. filed a proxy statement with the SEC Friday morning that showed HarperCollins with revenue of $1.19 billion in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2012, and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $86 million. Sales were off 1% compared to fiscal 2011, while EBITDA was down 8% from $93 million. more » As part of its effort to cut costs by $20 million to $30 million in fiscal 2013, Scholastic executives told analysts on a conference call Thursday morning that the company has instituted a hiring freeze and will also reduce staffing levels in some areas. more » Print book sales have shown healthy weekly gains since the Thanksgiving weekend though the pace is slightly below that of the 2011 holiday season. more » In her annual letter to employees, Simon & Schuster CEO Carolyn Reidy's emphasis was on how the publisher has re-tooled to reach both its traditional audience and the growing number of digital readers. In addition to restructuring the adult publishing division and sales and marketing operations, Reidy pointed to the new ways S&S is acquiring and creating content. more » Citing "areas of opportunity" Perseus president and CEO David Steinberger announced today that the company was shuffling executive responsibilities in a few key areas. Under the new reporting structure all three client service lines–Consortium (headed by Julie Schaper), Perseus Distribution (headed by Sabrina McCarthy) and PGW (headed by Susan Reich) will now report directly to Chief Operating Officer Joe Mangan. CFO Charles Gallagher has also picked up new responsibilities. more »
Bloomsbury Targeting Digital Readers In New Global Campaign Bloomsbury, with its new Just Great Reads promotion, is running what it is calling the "first ever" global marketing campaign targeted expressly at readers who favor devices. The push, which begins on Christmas day and runs for three weeks, will feature banner ads on newspapers and Web sites that cater to English language readers. The ads, running on Web sites ranging from the New York Times and The Guardian to Pinterest and Facebook, will, Bloomsbury said, have "IP detection" so readers can purchase books in whatever country they reside. more » » Amazon is bringing its Kindle Singles storefront to Europe. The company has launched its Kindle Singles Store at Amazon.co.uk, offering stories between 5,000 and 30,000 words to customers there. As in the U.S., writers of Kindle Singles can receive up to a 70% royalty rate on their work. In the U.K., Kindle Singles will be priced between £0.99 and £1.99. The U.K. storefront has gone live with Singles by, among others, Susan Hill, Candia McWilliam, and Len Deighton (writing a piece featuring James Bond). more » » Long time children's bookseller Andrea Vuleta, general manager of Mrs. Nelson's Toy in La Verne, Calif., has been tapped to replace Jennifer Bigelow as executive director of the Southern California Independent Booksellers Association starting next month. Chelsea Green Has Record Year, Gives Employess $2,500 Bonus Independent book publisher Chelsea Green announced that due to a record sales year and strong revenue growth, employees would each receive a $2,500 end-of-year bonus. more » Due to a change in its telephone service provider in conjunction with its move from Tarrytown to White Plains, N.Y., the American Booksellers Association has changed its phone number again.
