Sargent Says Macmillan Will Press Ahead in DoJ Lawsuit
In a letter sent to authors, illustrators and agents Wednesday afternoon, Macmillan CEO John Sargent said that despite Penguin's decision to settle with the Department of Justice in its e-book pricing-fixing lawsuit, Macmillan's position "has not changed." Sargent's letter didn't limit itself to the DoJ though, and included his thoughts on "flightless birds and consolidation," the digital transformation, DRM and e-book library lending. more »
Earnings Fell 34% at Scholastic on 10% Sales Drop
As it warned in November, sales and earnings fell at Scholastic for the second quarter ended November 30, with revenue down 10%, to $616.2 million, and net income off 24%, to $61.8 million. Sales were down in all of the publisher's operating groups. Sales in the children's book publishing and distribution segment declined 11%, to $350.1 million. more »
Baen E-books Now Available Via Amazon Kindle Store
Baen Books, an independent e-book retailer and publisher specializing in science-fiction and fantasy, will make its e-book list available through Amazon's Kindle store beginning sometime after mid-December 2012. While this is the first time Baen e-books, which have no digital rights management software, have been offered through a third-party retail site, the company promises that its e-books sold through Amazon will continue to be free of DRM. more »
New Wimpy Kid Crosses 1 Million Copies Sold
Book seven of Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, The Third Wheel, has passed the million mark in physical copies sold, according to Nielsen BookScan. The book will end the year as the #6 bestselling book of the year, placing behind only the Fifty Shades trilogy, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. more »

Samhain Publishing has uploaded over 2,000 titles to PubMatch, complete with full descriptions and EPUB files so that users can view partial contents of each book. While people can view these titles, if they want to contact Samhain for any purpose, they need to be a member of PubMatch. more » »

Amazon Studios Plans 6 Comedy Pilots: Amazon Studios, the original film and series production arm of Amazon.com, announced that it plans to produce pilots for six original comedy series.
Gaiman Announces Last Tour: Neil Gaiman has announced that his next book-signing tour will be his last. He'll be heading out in 2013 to sign copies of "The Ocean at the End of the Lane," which hits shelves June 18, traveling around the U.S., the U.K., and then going farther afield. Then: No more.
How Publishing Acclimated to Digital: "The good news is the numbers are in. According to Pew Internet and American Life Project, about 20 percent of U.S. adults have read an e-book in the past year. E-book users tend to read more books than those who read only print material."
