| October Bookstore Sales Rose 0.5% After falling 8% in September, bookstore sales bounced back in October with sales inching up 0.5% to $914 million, according to preliminary estimates released this morning by the U.S. Census Bureau. For the first 10 months of 2012, bookstore sales were down 1.3%, to $12.55 billion. more » The European Commission has finally completed its investigation into the e-book pricing policies of five publishers and Apple, reaching deals with Apple and four of the houses. News of a settlement has been leaking out in the European press for weeks and the EC issued a statement today outlining terms of the settlement, terms very much like those agreed to by three publishers in the Department of Justice lawsuit in the U.S. more » Nan Graham has been named senior v-p and publisher of Scribner, reporting to Susan Moldow, who was formerly publisher but became president of the Scribner Publishing Group when it was formed in October. more » The American Booksellers Association is getting a jump on the new year with new offices. The ABA will close its offices in Tarrytown on December 13. They will reopen in White Plains on December 19. In November, Diamond Digital, the digital comics program of Diamond Comic Distributors, began releasing all 25 chapters of Cerebus: High Society, the second volume of Dave Sim's (and artist Gerhard's) groundbreaking self-published graphic novel series, on a weekly basis that will continue through March 2013. This is the latest of several publishing moves around Sim and the Cerebus series and includes a successful Kickstarter campaign; a deal with IDW to release a new print edition of High Society, as well as an offer from Fantagraphics Books to bring the series back into print. more » » Ganxy,the online service that allows authors and publishers to sell content direct or through other e-tailers, continues to add more features since its big push at this year's Frankfurt Book Fair. Rex How, a formidable figure in Chinese publishing for 30 years, met with the press at the Sofitel on 46th Street for a demonstration of ChineseCUBES, his innovative system for learning to read, write and speak the Chinese language utilizing digital technology. Each cube or block represents a Chinese character that when combined with another cube can be used to form thousands of phrases and sentences. The computer program shows the user how to write, sound out, and translate each cube. "I want to dispel the fear of learning Chinese for non-native speakers and promote the cultural connection between East and West," Howe says, who's opened an office in New York. |
