Penguin Settles with DoJ; Terms Will Apply to Merged Company
In a move that had been expected since the announcement of the Penguin, Random House merger, Penguin Group (USA) has reached a settlement with the Department of Justice in the government's e-book pricing lawsuit. Terms are nearly identical to agreements reached with Simon & Schuster, Hachette and HarperCollins, but according to the government, if the Random House-Penguin merger is approved the newly formed company must abide by the agreement. more »
Vantage Press Closes
Vantage Press, one of the original 'vanity' publishing businesses, has closed three years after its acquisition by media investment banker David Lamb. In a letter to creditors received by PW, law firm Hendel & Collins of Springfield, Mass. writes, "Vantage does not have sufficient revenue to sustain itself as a going concern. It has, therefore, ceased all business operations." more »
Books for Young Latinos Exist – Just Not in the Classroom
A December 4 article in the New York Times highlighted the lack of classroom books written by and featuring Latinos, yet it referenced only big six and textbook publishers and left out nonmainstream publishing houses. Several of those smaller publishers say they are already producing books that fill the void for Latino children. more »
DC Comics Names Shelly Bond to Head Vertigo
DC Entertainment has promoted longtime Vertigo editor Shelly Bond to executive editor of its Vertigo imprint, succeeding former senior v-p and executive editor Karen Berger, who is stepping down after directing Vertigo for nearly 20 years. DC has also promoted Will Dennis to group editor at Vertigo and Mark Doyle, who has been promoted to editor, Vertigo. All three have worked for years at Vertigo under the leadership of Berger and their appointments seem aimed to reassure fans and artists that Vertigo will have some level of editorial continuity. more »

Candlewick Launches in iBookstore
Candlewick has announced that it will begin selling books on Apple's iBookstore. A selection of the company's picture books is now available – some integrating audio read by the authors – and readers can pre-order books there as well. more » »

Brink Launches Iconic
Author and award-winning photographer Brian Vanden Brink launched his newest monograph, Iconic: Perspectives on the Man-made World, with a slide show presentation and book signing at the Portland Museum of Art on December 13. The book is a follow up to his acclaimed Ruin. Both books are published by Down East Books in Maine.
