S&S Implements New E-book Agreements
Simon & Schuster has implemented new e-book agreements with its e-tailers. Although terms are confidential, e-tailers can sell individual titles at a discount. S&S joins HarperCollins and Hachette Book Group in modifying its e-book agreements following settlements with the DoJ in the government's lawsuit of e-book price fixing. more »
Wiley Has Weak Second Quarter; Restructuring Planned
Soft higher education markets, tight library budgets, and sluggish global retail channels, resulted in a disappointing second quarter at John Wiley. For the period ended October 31, revenue fell 3%, to $431.8 million, and operating income declined 13%, to $62.9 million. CEO Steven Smith said in prepared remarks that, due to what Wiley sees as permanent changes in some consumer behavior, it is preparing a restructuring program that will "better align" its costs "with current and expected market conditions as they impact our traditional print business." more »
B&N Closes Tikatok, More Stores
Barnes & Noble's second quarter filing with the SEC was newsier than most, containing disclosures that it has closed its Tikatok operation and that it will continue to reduce its overall number of retail stores. more »
Word Up and Learned Owl Turn to Indiegogo
In recent months crowdfunding Web site Indiegogo has become a go-to spot for booksellers looking to raise money, either to open a location or expand an existing one. In late November, about the same time that New York City's iconic children's bookstore Books of Wonder completed its campaign to revitalize, refurbish, and renew after 32 years, two other bookstore fundraising campaigns went live on the Indiegogo site: Word Up in Washington Heights, N.Y., and The Learned Owl's next chapter in Hudson, Ohio. more »

Library of Congress Gets $1.5 Million for New Literacy Awards

Publicity firm Media Connect (formerly Planned Television Arts) has two new staff members: Steve Matteo arrives as a publicity manager.
