Katherine Applegate has won the 2013 Newbery Medal for The One and Only Ivan (Harper); Jon Klassen has won the 2013 Randolph Caldecott Medal for This Is Not My Hat (Candlewick); and Nick Lake has won the 2013 Michael L. Printz Award for In Darkness (Bloomsbury). The awards were announced Monday morning at the American Library Association's midwinter conference in Seattle. more »

ALA Midwinter 2013: In Keynote, Caroline Kennedy Rallies Librarians
Leading into her Sunday keynote address at ALA Midwinter in Seattle, author and advocate Caroline Kennedy recalled a story told to her by Harry Belafonte, at a 50th Anniversary commemoration for the Civil Rights movement. Belafonte recalled how after a rousing speech delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King during a 1960s Civil Rights rally, he turned to King, and asked what was the point of speaking to these people, wasn't it just preaching to the choir? "Someone has to preach to the choir," King replied "Otherwise, they might stop singing." With that, Kennedy preached on the importance of libraries and literacy. more » »

Firebrand Technologies, provider of NetGalley, has announced that Steve Rutberg has been named director of marketing and sales. He has worked for WoltersKluwer Health, Taylor & Francis, and McGraw-Hill. Annie Johnston has been named content services specialist. She is formerly the digital content manager at Independent Publishers Group. Stuart Evers is now U.K. community manager, based in London. He is a former bookseller and editor.
