| Kobo, Book Discovery and More at Digital Book World 2013 Digital Book World 2013 wrapped up this year's conference with presentations from e-book retailer Kobo on its partnership with U.S. Indies, the evolving state of book discovery and e-book retail, and a roundtable response to the Penguin/Random merger and business models likely to come from it. more » Throughout this week's Digital Book World conference, one was constantly reminded of things that technology has made or will soon make a relic of the reading past. And for one new company, Total Boox (pronounced total books), that includes the way we pay for reading. Calling the "buy first, read later" nature of the book business a "burdensome remnant from the world of printed books," Total Boox is introducing a "pay-as-you read" approach that founder Yoav Lorch believes will encourage readers to try and explore more books. more » This week the American Booksellers Association announced that it added 40 indie bookstores in 24 states, which opened in 2012, including five branches of existing businesses and seven used booksellers. The biggest winners were New York and California, which each added five stores. And the impact of those stores on the local economy continues to be felt. According to a newly released study for 2011-2012, part of the Indie Impact series conducted by Civic Economics in partnership with the ABA, independents keep more than three times as much revenue in the local economy than chains. more » New strategic avenues for publishers was a recurring theme during the last day of Digital Book World, as topics from acquisition to marketing have all undergone significant makeovers, according to panelists and experts. more » In a year that started with an agreement to add Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication data to all of its graphic novel collections, DC Comics also reported that overall sales of its graphic novels to the library market grew by "double digits" in 2012 and the publisher is looking to continue that growth in 2013. more »
In 2012, Canada's TD Bank contributed more than C$4.5 million directly to children's literacy and reading initiatives, among them a cross-Canada multi-author tour, literary awards, organized reading clubs and an annual giveaway of over 500,000 copies of I've Lost My Cat (J'ai perdu mon chat) by Phillipe Béha. Alan Convery, TD's national manager of community relations, says the bank spent about another C$1 million in marketing leverage dollars, promoting projects with ads, and with in-store advertising. more » » Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation has teamed up with the St. Paul Public Library for a program called Read Brave, which is designed to encourage youth empowerment. Teens who participate in the program can win a chance to board Lady Gaga's Born Brave Bus prior to her February 6 concert. The bus is traveling to Lady Gaga's U.S. tour dates and partnering with local organizations on pre-concert tailgate events for young people. more » » Technology is changing the way people read, and nowhere is that more evident than in the explosive growth in the development of enhanced e-books for children. But what can these new kinds of books bring to the table – and how challenging are they to execute?
