Jerry Jenkins Launches Self-Publishing Company
Bestselling Christian author Jerry Jenkins (Left Behind), a long-time critic of do-it-yourself books, has launched Christian Writers Guild Publishing to help authors publish their works. The program includes education and mentoring. Those applying to the guild's "published" program must submit part of their manuscript for evaluation. If accepted, they follow a six-month course—costing just under $10,000—that includes mentoring by a published author. more »
Could 'Timmy Failure' Spell Success for Candlewick?
Candlewick has high hopes for the eponymous hero of Stephan Pastis's Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, on sale February 26. The first children's book from the creator of Pearls Before Swine, a comic strip that appears in more than 600 U.S. newspapers, it centers on clueless, self-confident Timmy Failure and his 1,500-pound business partner, a polar bear named Total, who together run the Total Failure detective agency. Candlewick is calling the $250,000 marketing campaign for the illustrated middle-grade novel its "most robust ever for a debut book." more »
Mantel Wins Costa Award
Hilary Mantel's Bring Up the Bodies has won another major literary award, taking home the Costa Book Award and its £30,000 prize. Late last year, the novel won the Booker Prize (as did the previous book in her series, Wolf Hall), making Bring Up the Bodies the only book to win the Booker and the Costa in the same year. more »
MacNair Starts New Transmedia Company
After working in a field she had dubbed "cross-platform consulting," Swanna MacNair has launched a new company, called Electric Yarn, that will be dedicated to developing intellectual property across a multitude of platforms. Electric Yarn, which got a plug at Digital Book World on the panel "Hollywood Meets Publishing," which MacNair appeared on, is, she said, a "next generation transmedia firm." more »

CUNY Launches Five-Day Publishing Institute
The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism is launching the CUNY Publishing Institute in June, a five-day intensive course on book publishing led by prominent digital and print publishing professionals. John Oakes, a veteran of traditional publishing and cofounder of the Internet-based OR Books, will direct the Institute. Other headliners include Jane Friedman, CEO, Open Road Media, and Larry Kirshbaum, president of Amazon Publishing. more » »

Big Increase in ACX Audio Production
Audible announced that Audiobook Creation Exchange—the company's online audiobook rights marketplace and production platform—produced ten times as many audiobooks in 2012 than it did ing 2011, its debut year. Audible said "thousands" of new titles were created, a number that topped the amount of titles from Audible's top three providers. more »
