| Macmillan to Begin E-book Library Lending Pilot As the American Library Association Midwinter conference kicks off its run in Seattle, Macmillan has announced that it will begin its first e-book library lending program by the end of the first quarter. Using the agency model and working with a number of distributors, Macmillan will offer libraries over 1,200 backlist e-books from its Minotaur Books imprint. At launch, Baker & Taylor, OverDrive and 3M will be selling the Macmillan titles to library systems. Once purchased by a library, the titles will be available to them to lend for two years or 52 lends, whichever comes first. Within adult books, e-book sales rose 30.6% in the month, to $103.9 million, while hardcover sales increased 3.1%. Thirteen picture books in print format will be released initially under the CYR imprint; after the first list, the imprint will release four to six picture books each year. more » On January 25, Stephen King published a Kindle Single called "Guns," an essay about gun violence in the United States and possible solutions. "I think the issue of an America awash in guns is one every citizen has to think about," said King. "If this helps provoke constructive debate, I've done my job. Once I finished writing 'Guns' I wanted it published quickly, and Kindle Singles provided an excellent fit." This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Bologna Children's Book Fair, and for the first time, BolognaFiere and the Italian Publishers Association will award the BOP – the Bologna Prize for the Best Children's Publishers of the Year. The award will highlight creative editorial choices and innovations made during the previous year. more » » Children's book editor Nina Ignatowicz died on January 19 after a brief illness. She was 75. Ignatowicz began her career in children's books in 1961, when she was hired by Susan Hirschman to be the receptionist for Harper Junior Books; she retired at the end of 2007.
