| November Bookstore Sales Rose 3% Bookstore sales rose 3.3% in November, to $965 million, according to preliminary estimates released Tuesday morning by the U.S. Census Bureau. With the November gain, bookstore sales were down just under 1%, at $13.51 billion, for 2012 with one month to go in the year. more » The bestselling author of The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown, will publish his next novel in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada on May 14. Brown's publisher, Random House's Knopf Doubleday group, said the new book, Inferno, will again feature Robert Langdon, the symbologist protagonist at the center of The Da Vinci Code. RH is doing a first announced printing of four million copies for the book, which is being released simultaneously in print and e-book. more » In an effort to broaden the reach and impact of the National Book Awards, the National Book Foundation will select a longlist of 10 titles in each of its four categories (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people's literature), beginning in 2013. In addition, judges comprising the four panels will no longer be limited to writers. more » With the first reviews of Lawrence Wright's book on Scientology, Going Clear, appearing in PW and The New York Times ahead of Knopf's January 17 release of the book, the Church of Scientology has issued a statement challenging the accuracy of the book. Knopf said it stands behind Wright and "look[s] forward to publishing Going Clear on Thursday." more » The fourth edition of Scholastic's "Kids & Family Reading Report," released by the company on Monday, put the emphasis on what the growth in e-books and digital reading devices has had on the reading habits of children aged 6-17 as well as their parents. As Scholastic CEO Dick Robinson said in the introduction to the study "much has changed" since Scholastic released the first of its bi-annual reports in 2006. more »
EBSCO Strikes Deal with Grey House to Publish Salem Press Titles EBSCO Publishing this week announced that it has struck an exclusive license with Grey House Publishing to become the publisher of the print editions of Salem Press titles. EBSCO acquired the 60-year-old Salem Press in 2009, and EBSCO officials say they will continue to produce new editions of Salem's reference content for the public library, academic and high school markets. more » » In an exclusive arrangement, Oxford University Press has hired The Gersh Agency to represent its titles in Hollywood. Through the the agreement the agency will look to sell film, television and digital rights to the publisher's catalog, which includes both academic and trade titles. more » » Sourcebooks, which six weeks ago launched its Put Me in the Story book platform that allows parents to personalize interactive picture books for children on the iPad, announced today a partnership with Sesame Workshop. Select Sesame Street titles will be added to the Put Me in the Story app and Web site beginning in February. more » » Six-year-old WORD in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn is looking to expand across the Hudson late this spring with a new bookstore/cafe in Jersey City, N.J., next to the Grove Street PATH station. Owner Christine Onorati hadn't originally planned to open a second store, but has family in Jersey City and has watched the area change and grow. "I have very high hopes for this new store, and I'm excited to help foster the vibrant, literary, community-focused spirit of Jersey City," she says. more » » Prometheus Books has signed a multiyear sales and distribution agreement with Random House Publisher Services (RHPS). Beginning April 1, 2013, RHPS will provide exclusive sales and distribution for all Prometheus physical and digital titles in the United States and internationally. more » » Roger Cooper, who recently started his own consulting firm after Perseus closed his Vanguard imprint, has been retained by e-book house RosettaBooks as associate publisher-at-large. At Clarkson Potter, Francis Lam has been named editor-at-large. Lam, who was most recently features editor at Gilt Taste, will start at CP on February 19. Before Gilt, Lam was a senior writer at Salon.com. Deb Gaffin is joining Open Road Media as a strategic advisor, directing Open Road's marketing and merchandising efforts in the U.K. and Europe. Gaffin, formerly v-p of marketing for Mindshapes, digital product director for Nosy Crow, and an executive at Scholastic, will be based in London and report to Rachel Chou, Open Road's chief marketing officer. more » »

Chaon, Diaz and Watkins Named Story Prize Finalists The nine-year-old Story Prize, which honors short story collections, has named its three finalists for 2012: Dan Chaon (for Stay Awake); Junot Diaz (for This Is How You Lose Her); and Claire Vaye Watkins (for Battleborn).
