| Libraries: Good Value, Lousy Marketing The singular most important finding in the latest Pew study, Library Services in the Digital Age, is that libraries—in the opinion of most Americans—aren't just about books. 80% of U.S. residents say that lending books is a "very important" service, but they rate the help they get from reference librarians as equally important. more » The long-awaited biography of Woodrow Wilson by A. Scott Berg finally has a publication date. Wlison, which Putnam signed 10 years ago, will be released in September 2013. Berg is a Pulitzer Prize-winner with a string of bestsellers to his credit--including bios of Charles Lindbergh and Katharine Hepburn--and who also won the National Book Award for Max Perkins. more » This week, Amazon's home page began featuring a promotion for author Vincent Zandri and the success he's found through publishing on the Kindle platform after his book deal with a traditional publishing house fell through. more » Vantage Press, which closed down in December, has sent a letter to authors informing them that they have until January 31 to return an "Assignment & Release Agreement" if they want to get their rights back to their books. In exchange, Vantage is requiring authors to release Vantage from any claims and liabilities, including any royalties earned through the date of the returned agreement. more » In its trading update for 2012, Pearson said it expects Penguin revenue for the last year to be about flat with 2011, excluding the impact of exchange rates. The update had little to say on when the Penguin merger with Random House might be completed, saying approvals by different governments make the timing "uncertain." Pearson did say that when the deal is done, a "significant restructuring" will be needed to "demerge Penguin from Pearson and integrate it with Random House." more »
ProQuest to Acquire Ebook Library In a move that will further expand its e-book footprint in the library market, ProQuest has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Ebook Library (EBL), a pioneering e-book provider in the library market. The acquisition comes a year after ProQuest bought ebrary, another e-book player in the library space in January 2011, and just as librarians prepare to gather for the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, beginning January 25. more » » Ingram has added a new content access model to its MyiLibrary e-content platform to provide libraries greater flexibility in e-book lending.The model enables libraries to purchase a set of access credits for an e-book and lend it simultaneously to multiple patrons for a set cost, and lending period. more » » After a decade overseeing the Independent Book Publishers Association, Florrie Binford Kichler will retire at the end of June. Kichler, who started as a board member at the organization, was named president five years ago, after Jan Nathan died. With Kichler's departure, Terry Nathan, who's been at the IBPA for 20 years, is stepping into the role of COO, while a search for Kichler's replacement, who will get the title of executive director, gets underway. more » » Theatre Communications Groups is releasing a standalone edition of Tony Kushner's screenplay for Lincoln. Pearson Nook Investment Completed Pearson has completed its $89.5 million investment in Nook Media, which gives the publisher a 5% stake in the company.
