Print Units Fell 9 Percent in 2012
Unit sales of print books fell just over 9 percent in 2012 at outlets tracked by Nielsen BookScan, roughly the same percentage decline posted between 2010 and 2011. Between 2010 and 2012, print book unit sales dropped just under 16 percent. The steepest decline came in adult nonfiction where units fell 13 percent, while units in juvenile nonfiction rose 5.4 percent. more »
AudioGO Acquires Blackstone Audio
AudioGO has acquired Blackstone Audio from the Black family for an undisclosed price. The purchase gives the U.K.-based AudioGO a major American presence to complement its existing operations in Rhode Island and New York City. more »
Kobo Off to Slow Start at Indies
Kobos and e-books had little impact on sales at independents this holiday season, although the price reduction on Minis over Black Friday weekend, did help give them a boost at some stores. Porter Square Books in Cambridge, Mass., sold more than 25 Kobo e-readers that weekend. More typical was the experience of 20-year-old Broadway Books in Portland, Ore., which sold far fewer Kobos between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but had to reorder. Still, e-book sales were "negligible," said co-owner Roberta Dyer. more »
Crown Launches Additional Paperback Features with Extra Libris
Crown Publishers has announced the launch of Extra Libris, a new program under which select paperbacks released by its Broadway Books and Hogarth imprints will provide readers with a blend of additional content beyond the original text. Beginning in spring 2013, all paperbacks issued under the program will include a full 16-page signature of new material, such as author essays, Q&As, and Readers' Guides. more »

Authors Join Forces for a Crowdsourced Appearance
Group tours are becoming de rigueur for YA authors, but a quintet of novelists – Beth Revis, Marissa Meyer, Marie Lu, Victoria Schwab, and Megan Shepherd – are putting a new spin on the trend. The five, who are each publishing with different imprints, are letting reader votes determine where they will visit; they will travel to the location receiving the most votes to stage a panel discussion and book signing. more » »

Capstone Publishing Group has acquired Maupin House Publishers, which specializes in producing literacy resources for teachers and other education professionals. GABBS Boston Changes Hands
Larry B. May, president and founder of the GABBS network, announced today that he has sold GABBS Boston, the bargain book show he founded three years ago, to Advisor Communications in Framingham, Mass. Under the new arrangement, Bill Sell, managing partner of Advisor Communications, which works with May on both the Boston and Atlanta bargain book shows, will oversee GABBS Boston. Two Massachusetts bargain book distributors—World Publications Group in East Bridgewater and Book Enterprises in Fall River—have signed on to be major sponsors for the 2013 show. more » »

Robert Wilkie Retires
After three decades with Half Price Books and the Texas Bookman, its remainder and bargain book distribution division, general manager Robert Wilkie retired at the end of December. Other than a brief stint working at an art gallery, he spent his entire career at Half Price. Wilkie began working there in 1982, then moved to the Texas Bookman, when it was founded the following year. more » »

William Boggess has joined Barer Literary, LLC as an agent. He was previously with Little, Brown.

Kate Rados has joined Crown's marketing department as director, community development, reporting to Jill Flaxman. She was previously with F+W Media as group marketing director.
