Elsevier Acquires Knovel.com
Elsevier, a unit of the global Scientific/Technical/Medical publisher Reed Elsevier, has acquired Knovel.com, an online subscription reference service providing highly technical data primarily aimed at engineers. Founded in 2001 by Chris Forbes, Knovel partners with more than 100 STM publishing partners to delivers technical information and analytical tools to more than 800 institutional clients around the world. more »
Lalicki to Retire from HarperCollins
Barbara Lalicki, whose career in children's book publishing spans more than 40 years, will retire at the end of January. Currently senior v-p and editorial director at HarperCollins Children's Books, Lalicki came to Harper in 1999 during the merger with William Morrow, where she had been publisher of Morrow Junior Books. more »
10,000 Smashwords E-books Acquired by Douglas County Libraries
Douglas County Libraries has acquired 10,000 e-book titles from Smashwords, bringing its total number of e-book files owned to 21,000. All of the content purchased from Smashwords, including books in popular genres such as fiction, romance, mystery, and science fiction, is available for borrowing by library patrons. more »

Rosetta Teams With Harvard on Line of Health E-books
RosettaBooks has partnered with Harvard Health Publications to do line of original e-books ranging in subject matter from CEO management training to helping children with their sleeping habits. The line will feature eight titles, each with a digital list price of $5.99. The titles are all currently available from Amazon, B&N, Apple and Kobo. The partnership also marks Harvard's first foray into publishing e-book originals. more » »

'The Hobbit' on Top in Social Media; 'Fifty Shades' Is Back
J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit continues as the #1 book on social media, according to CoverCake, a company that uses analytical tools to track what's trending on social media, its popularity obviously being driven by the movie. Fifty Shades of Grey, which had dropped several spots in November, had a big resurgence to the #2 slot in December, due to the trilogy and its author getting exposure in virtually every 2012 recap article, according to Jeff Costello, v-p of sales at CoverCake: "We noticed a lot of women talking about the book as a holiday gift idea." more » »
Devlin To Replace Herman at Running Press
Allison Devlin has been appointed v-p marketing director at Running Press, replacing Craig Herman. She has been marketing director at Crown, overseeing the Potter Craft, Watson Guptill and Martha Stewart brand publications, and has also been at Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, HarperCollins Children's Books and DK Publishing. Devlin will start January 16 and will divide her time between the Running Press office in Philadelphia and the Perseus office in New York. more » »

Late last month, Jane Friedman and Jeff Sharp, co-founders of Open Road hosted a luncheon for Rose Styron at Michaels in celebration of the launch of her book for Random House, Selected Letters of William Styron. Open Road publishes William Styron's backlist. In the photo are Jeff Sharp, Alexandra Styron, Jane Friedman, director Scott Cooper who is adapting Styron's Lie Down in Darkness into a film for Open Road, Mike Nichols and Rose Styron.



Delilah Launches Book Club
Famed radio personality Delilah is starting a book club. The radio host, who anchors a nightly syndicated song request program, will launch the new club with Kristin Hannah's Home Front.
