| To author and scholar Leslie Klinger, it's elementary: the characters of Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson are solidly in the public domain, and should be free for creators to use in new works. But after recent efforts by the Arthur Conan Doyle Estate to extract license fees, Klinger (who is also a lawyer) filed suit in federal court last week against the estate, asking the court to declare that the famous characters of Holmes and Watson are no longer protected by federal copyright laws. more » Reader's Digest is once again restructuring its debt and in the process has filed for Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Indiana's Mudsock Books & Curiosity Closing After almost five years of stagnant sales, Mudsock Books & Curiosity Shoppe in Fishers, Ind., is closing. Binc Opens Up Scholarships to Bookstore Employees The Book Industry Charitable Foundation will accept applications from February 18, 2013 through April 18, 2013 for the Binc Foundation Scholarship program.The program will offer up to 35 higher education awards totaling $100,000 to eligible bookstore employees, bookstore owners, former Borders employees and dependents of bookstore employees, owners and former Borders employees. more » | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
