Lawsuit Seeks to Put Sherlock Holmes in the Public Domain
To author and scholar Leslie Klinger, it's elementary: the characters of Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson are solidly in the public domain, and should be free for creators to use in new works. But after recent efforts by the Arthur Conan Doyle Estate to extract license fees, Klinger (who is also a lawyer) filed suit in federal court last week against the estate, asking the court to declare that the famous characters of Holmes and Watson are no longer protected by federal copyright laws. more »
Reader's Digest Files for Chapter 11
Reader's Digest is once again restructuring its debt and in the process has filed for Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Under the plan, RD will convert about $465 million in notes to equity, leaving the company with approximately $100 million in debt when it emerges from bankruptcy, which it anticipates occurring in about six months. more »
MetaComet Debuts AuthorPortal.com
MetaComet Systems, the company that developed the RoyaltyTracker royalty management system, has begun tests on AuthorPortal.com, a new platform that it hopes will improve communications between authors, publishers and agents. AuthorPortal.com is in beta testing with the Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group and Samhain Publishing, and the company's president David Marlin said he expects to gradually add more publishers in the months ahead. more »
