B&N to Shrink Nook Business
With sales in its Nook segment falling 26% in the third quarter ended January 31 and an EBITDA loss that increased to $190.4 million from $82.8 million, Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch said the company is taking "significant actions to begin to right size our cost structure in the Nook segment" and will also take a large write down on Nook devices to try to sell existing inventory. more »
B&N Not Accelerating Store Closings
Barnes & Noble used its third quarter conference call to try to undo the damage caused by a Wall Street Journal story that said the chain is accelerating its store closings and would close about one-third of its outlets over 10 years. Instead, the company stated its plans to open three to five new stores in fiscal 2014 that begins May 1. more »
Penguin Faces June 3 Trial in e-Books Case
The U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust litigation for e-book pricing is moving forward on June 3 with Penguin in the defendant's seat alongside Apple, despite Penguin's settlement with the DoJ last December. Yesterday Judge Denise L. Cote signed an order denying Penguin's request to sit out the case and requested an initial witness list by Friday. more »
Stranded Booksellers Finally Home After Unofficial Winter Institute 8.5
Booksellers and publishers unexpectedly stranded in Kansas City by a Tuesday storm held an unofficial "Wi8.5" in hotels and local restaurants, before finally heading home Wednesday. According to travel status updates posted on social media, all Wi8 attendees seem to have made it home by now -- or are well on their way. more »

Audible and the Center for Fiction Establish Litarary Award on Writing on Illness
Audible, Inc.has created a new literary award established in memory of Christopher Doheny, a long-time employee who died on February 20, at age 31, of cystic fibrosis. Catherine Burke has been promoted to publisher, Sphere Fiction at Little, Brown, effective immediately. She has been with the company for three years.

Michael Perlman has been promoted to v-p, director, client sales & services at Simon & Schuster. He joined S&S in 2005 as national accounts manager for Sam's Club and BJ's.

At Penguin, Suzie Sisoler has been promoted to senior director of consumer engagement, and will oversee the consumer engagement group formerly known as the online consumer sales and marketing group.
