Nook Losses to Exceed 2012
Barnes & Noble has drawn lots of media attention about a Wall Street Journal story that focused on the company's plans to close 15 to 20 stores annually for the next 10 years, but the segment that is likely more of a concern to B&N executives is Nook. After a disappointing holiday season when Nook device sales failed to meet expectations, B&N reported late Wednesday that Nook's EBITDA loss for its fiscal year ending at the end of April will be greater than in fiscal 2012 when the unit had an EBITDA loss of $262 million. more »

Zola Books To Start Selling Macmillan Titles
Joe Regal, founder of Zola Books, the much-anticipated e-book retailing startup, title recommendation and social media site, announced plans to start selling e-books from Macmillan by late next week. Macmillan is the first major publisher to begin selling its e-books through the site, and Regal said other publishers will follow over the next three months. more »
Bestsellers: 'American Sniper' Jumps, 'Legend of Zelda' Plummets
Chris Kyle's American Sniper was the #1 bestseller on Nielsen BookScan, in the first full week of sales reporting following the author's death. more »
Digital Kids Conference Focuses on Content Creation
Computer and mobile device users view 4 billion videos on YouTube every day. That was one of the statistics used by Victor Lee, v-p digital marketing at Hasbro, to illustrate to attendees at the Digital Kids conference held earlier this week the type of competition they face in competing for children's time. more »
NAL Buys Hit Aussie Erotica Fan Fic
Penguin's New American Library imprint has acquired a fan fiction hit by Tara Sue Me known as the Submissive Trilogy. Claire Zion, v-p and editorial director of NAL, bought world (and digital) rights to the trilogy in a deal brokered with Australian house, Red Publishing. NAL intends to release the first book in the series, The Submissive, on June 4. more »
