Indie Booksellers Sue Amazon, Big Six over E-book DRM
Three independent bookstores have filed an antitrust class action lawsuit against the big six houses and Amazon charging that by signing agreements that call for the use of DRM on e-books sold through the Kindle, the online retailer and the publishers have combined to restrict the sale of e-books. more »
WI8 & CAMEX Face Weather Woes
Weather has not been a friend to this year's Winter Institute 8, sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, or CAMEX, the trade show of the National Association of College Stores. In advance of a major snowstorm, which began earlier today in Kansas City, Mo., a number of airlines have canceled flights. Still, organizers of both shows are hopeful. "Right now, we are working as hard as we can to put on a good show. No authors or presenters have canceled," says ABA content officer Dan Cullen. more »
Grand Central to More Than Double Forever Output
Grand Central Publishing said this morning that it plans to more than double the number of titles it releases in its romance publishing program over the next two years. The title count in the Forever and Forever Yours e-book only imprint will rise to 120 titles this year from 64 released in 2012 and increase again to more than 190 titles in 2014. According to Amy Pierpont, editorial director of Forever and Forever Yours, roughly 75% of the expansion is in the digital only--Forever Yours--imprint, which will also include "classic backlist" titles. more »
Greco Named CEO of Carson-Dellosa
Al Greco has been appointed CEO of Carson-Dellosa Publishing, the Greensboro, N.C.--based publisher of supplemental materials for elementary and middle school teachers and parents, succeeding Judy Harris. Greco joined Carson-Dellosa in 2011 as senior v-p of sales, promotions and marketing after serving in a number of v-p sales roles at Random House. more »
Candlewick to Launch Big Picture Press
On the 10th anniversary of Candlewick Press's publication of the first book in the bestselling Ology series, developed by the Templar Company in the U.K., the Somerville, Mass.-based publisher announced that it will be the U.S. publisher of a new imprint also from Templar, called Big Picture Press, which will debut this fall. more »

Frankfurt Fair Personnel Shifts
The Frankfurt Book Fair has appointed Michelle Turnbach as the new sales manager for English-Language World based in New York City. Turnbach was previously with Baker & Taylor. In addition, Riky Stock, director of the German Book Office in New York, will add managing the Literary Agents and Scouts Centre (LitAg) at this fall's fair to her role. The shifts come following the departure of Susanne Schetter. more » »
Tracking Amazon: Dan Brown's 'Inferno' Cracks Top 10
It won't be published until May 14, but Dan Brown's Inferno jumped to #5 from #34 on Amazon's bestseller list on February 21, thanks to its cover reveal on Wednesday. The reveal had less of an impact on the Kindle edition which saw a smaller jump (#57 from #182), following the release of the cover. more » »

At Random House, Avideh Bashirrad has assumed the newly created position of v-p, associate publisher for the Random House/Dial Press fiction list, reporting to Susan Kamil. Also at Random House, Leigh Marchant is now director of marketing for Random House, Spiegel & Grau, Dial Press, and the Modern Library. She joined the company in 2010.

Amanda Ridout will leave her position as managing director at Phaidon Press to pursue personal projects. She has been with the company for two years. more » »

New National Book Awards Online Submission Process Opens April 1
This year, for the first time, the National Book Foundation will offer an all-online submission process allowing publishers to submit and pay for National Book Award entries using one simple online system. The submission period will open on April 1 and close on June 1, with the books themselves due to judges by July 15 more »
