Macmillan Settles E-book Price Suit with DoJ
With its larger publisher competitors already having settled with the Department of Justice, Macmillan said Friday morning that it too has reached an agreement that will end the government's lawsuit over its e-book pricing policy. In a letter to authors, illustrators and agents Macmillan CEO John Sargent said he agreed to settle "because the potential penalties became too high to risk even the possibility of an unfavorable outcome." more »
Surprise Bestseller? 'Legend of Zelda' Takes Number One Spot
The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia was Nielsen BookScan's #1 bestseller for the week ending February 3, selling nearly 60,000 copies in its first week. A significant percentage of that number is likely preorders, as the book spent 100 days in Amazon's top 100 (many of them in the top 10) before it even released. more »
D&M's New Society Imprint Sold
Another imprint of bankrupt D&M Publishers has found a new home with New Society Publishers being re-acquired by its previous owners and D&M creditors Chris and Judith Plant and Carol Newell of Renewal Partnersreall. Judith Plant will once again take on the role of New Society publisher and all distribution channels will remain unchanged. more »
Granada Books Becomes First New Santa Barbara Indie in Decades
When Borders and Barnes & Noble closed two years ago in Santa Barbara the city was left with just one general indie, Chaucer's, and the downtown community had nowhere else to buy books. Granada Books will provide a well-located alternative, and intends to be a cultural and literary center for readers of all ages and arts aficionados. more »
Princeton University Press Wins Top Honor at PROSE Awards
Officials from the Association of American Publishers have announced that the 2012 R.R. Hawkins Award has been presented to Princeton University Press for Peter Brown's Through the Eye of a Needle: Wealth, the Fall of Rome, and the Making of Christianity in the West, 350-550 AD. The award is the top honor given by the AAP for its PROSE Awards (for Professional and Scholarly Excellence). more »
