| Winter Institute Proceeds, Despite Stormy Weather The annual gathering of independent booksellers proceeded as scheduled, although many booksellers and publishers left early Monday to beat a second snow storm bearing down on Kansas City. Others may be stranded there through today, but all queried by PW considered Winter Institute 8 well worth their while, despite the travel disruptions and delays. more » In a filing late last week, the U.S. Department of Justice said it will not file an amicus brief after all in the appeal of the Georgia State e-reserves case. The decision not to intervene in the contentious case comes after U.S. attorneys in late January asked the court for more time to consider filing an amicus "in support of appellants (the publishers), or in support of neither party." more » October was a tough month for publishers with only the adult e-book, digital audio and university press segments posting gains among the major categories. Adult e-book sales rose 40.7% in the month at publishers that report to AAP's StatShot program, with sales hitting $103.7 million. more » Judge Jed S. Rakoff, who is overseeing the lawsuit filed against Amazon and the big six publishers by three independent booksellers, has ordered that all parties attend a scheduling conference March 11 at the U.S. Court House in New York City. In his order, Judge Rakoff said he hopes to have the case go to trial within five months after the March 11 conference. more » Looking to take advantage of the popularity of the A&E television show Duck Dynasty, Books-A-Million is creating Duck Commander displays in all of its stores. ComicsPRO Elects Gaul President A new slate of officers was elected at this year's ComicsPRO meeting, including a new president. Thomas Gaul, owner of CornerStoreComics.com and Beach Ball Comics, both in Southern California, replaces Joe Field, of Flying Colors, in the post. Now in its seventh year, ComicPRO is an organization for comic book retailers; about 120 retailers showed up to Atlanta February 21-23 for three days of publisher presentations, seminars and brainstorming sessions. more » » Columbia University's Rare Book and Manuscript Library has acquired the archives of Wendy and Richard Pini's Elfquest, a popular fantasy comic book and graphic novel series first created in 1978. more » » The London Book Fair 2014 will take place at Earls Court from Tuesday, April 8–Thursday, April 10 in 2014. The Digital Minds Conference will take place on April 7. Last week, Dan Kennedy read at his book lunch at Freeman's. Kennedy is the host of The Moth Podcast, as well as a frequent host of The Moth StorySLAMs in New York City. He read excerpts from his forthcoming novel, American Spirit, (which publishes May 28th from Amazon/New Harvest) and was introduced by his editor Ed Park, who was a founding editor of The Believer and is now a senior editor at Amazon. | | |||||||||||||||||||||
