Books-A-Million Posts a 2012 Profit
Books-A-Million's bet on taking over a host of former Borders stores in late 2011 paid off in 2012 as the chain reported net income of $2.5 million for the year ended February 2, 2013 compared to a loss of $2.8 million in the prior year. Sales rose 7.5%, to $503.8 million, despite a 3.6% decline in comparable store sales. more »
Bologna 2013: An Emphasis on Middle-Grade and Realistic Fiction
Despite cold, rainy weather and scheduling that rubbed up against Passover and Easter, attendees at this year's Bologna Children's Book Fair reported that foot traffic was heavy, moods were optimistic, and business was getting done. Agents, publishers, and rights managers alike reported increased interest in middle-grade fiction. "People want lightly illustrated middle-grade or standalone contemporary," said agent Ginger Clark. "They're skeptical of trilogies. I haven't heard a specific genre that people want, except contemporary YA – that's refreshing." more »
Penguin To Ease Restrictions on Library E-books
ALA officials said they were happy that Penguin had decided to ease its restrictions, but in a post on the ALA's e-content blog yesterday, ALA's Larra Clark kept the change in perspective. "[It's] the tip of the iceberg for the change we might see as a result of the merger of Penguin and Random House," she noted. more »
Herman to Head Up Peanuts Publishing
Craig Herman joined Peanuts Worldwide on March 18 as executive director of publishing. He will be responsible for all editorial content for the Peanuts brand around the world, including physical books, e-books, apps, and other digital formats. He was most recently at Running Press, which has published Peanuts storybooks since 2007. more »

Dave Bolen has joined Highlights Press as director of sales. Mary Cogan has joined the Highlights book group in the newly created position of senior editor, Highlights Press. Sarah Zhang has joined Boyds Mills Press as assistant editor. Tessia Bekelja and Brittany Ryan have joined Highlights as editorial interns in the Book Publishing Group.
