Random House Modifies Contracts for its Digital Imprints
Reacting to criticism from the Science Fiction Writers Association and other groups about the terms for its new digital imprints, Random House has made changes to its contracts. The most significant change is that prospective authors for the Hydra, Alibi, LoveSwept and Flirt imprints will now be able to choose from two models--the original profit share deal or a more traditional advance plus royalty deal. more »

Judge Jed Rakoff, the judge in the recently filed Book House Of Stuyvesant Plaza, Inc. et al v. Amazon.com, Inc. et al case, deemed a proposal from the parties to delay—or at least greatly drag their heels— in the suit "completely unacceptable," and denied the motion. more »

Harlequin, Sylvia Day Launch Cosmo Red Hot Reads with Seven-Figure Deal
Harlequin will kick off a new e-book program in conjunction with Cosmopolitan called Cosmo Red Hot Reads. The program will launch on August 15 with Afterburn by Sylvia Day; Cosmo Red Hot Reads will also publish another Day book in November called Aftershock. The two-book deal with the bestselling author was made for seven figures. more »

Threats Force Vick to Cancel Signings
Michael Vick's book tour for his autobiography Finally Free, released in September, has been canceled after Barnes & Noble stores in Atlanta and Exton, Pa. and Books & Greetings in Northvale, N.J. received "threats of personal harm and property damage." Worthy Publishing, along with Vick, his advisors, and his family, made the call to cancel signings around the country. more » »

Nine-year-old Porter Square Books in Cambridge, Mass., is the latest Boston-area store to go on the selling block. At Grand Central, Emi Battaglia is v-p, associate publisher and, now, marketing director. She joined the company in 1994. Brian McLendon, who joined the company two years ago as associate publisher of Twelve, will continue in that role, and will also assume the title of associate publisher at GCP.

At Thames & Hudson, Christopher Sweet has been appointed editorial director for trade. Lauren Miller has been named associate marketing director, overseeing marketing functions and logistics.

Karen Patterson has joined F+W Media as national sales director handling the Adams Media product line. She has held previous positions with Barnes & Noble, Random House, and Sterling.

Adrian Mellor has been appointed managing director at Oxford University Press's Asia education division. more » »
