| Profits Jumped 75% at Random House Random House parent company Bertelsmann put a cap on a record year for the publishing house, announcing that worldwide revenue at RH rose 22.5%, to 2.14 billion euros, while operating EBIT skyrocketed 75.6% to 325 million euros. The primary reason for the increase, of course, was the Fifty Shades trilogy which Bertelsmann said sold more than 70 million copies in all formats through RH's English, German and Spanish language companies. more » After founding the Berkeley, California-based Counterpoint over five years ago, Charlie Winton is handing over the reigns to a new boss. Winton will be leaving his post as publisher, and, on May 1, Rolph Blythe, a former marketing and publicity director at the company, will succeed him. Winton will remain chairman and CEO of Counterpoint as well as executive editor-at-large. more » In a series of deals signed at the Bologna Children's Book Fair, Trajectory, a digital publishing, distribution and technology developer, announced partnerships with China's People's Education Press and Xiamen Bluebird Cartoon Company. In a separate deal Trajectory is releasing the One World Kids App, which offers kids content from around the world. more » Animation house Frederator is launching Frederator Books, a digital publishing imprint with plans to release 100 digital titles in 2013 and brought in publishing and distribution veteran David Wilk to direct the line of children's illustrated e-books. more » Argentinean author, illustrator, and musician Isol has won the annual Astrid Lindgren Memorial Prize. The award was announced Tuesday in a presentation from Vimmerby, Sweden, which was broadcast live online, as well as to gathered crowds at the Bologna Book Fair. more » Potomac Books has been acquired by the University of Nebraska Press, effective March 31, 2013. Potomac will continue to operate under the direction of Sam Dorrance as publisher. more »
Wattpad Hires Faktor, Chan and Gardner Wattpad, an online writing community aimed at consumers reading on mobile devices, announced the hiring of Candice Faktor, Charles Chan and Ashleigh Gardner. more » » Long-time commission rep, Frank Moster of Melman-Moster Associates Inc., died on Sunday from a rare and fast-moving cancer. He was 69. He began his career in the book business at Macmillan in 1965. He also held positions at Holt, Rinehart & Winston; Hawthorne Books; Little, Brown; and Watson-Guptill before becoming a commission rep in 1983.
