Europeans Approve Penguin-Random House Merger
The march toward approval of the Random House, Penguin Group merger continued Friday with the news that the European Commission has approved the deal without conditions. The approval by the European authorities follows the approval of the transaction by the U.S. Department of Justice, the ACCC in Australia, and the NZCC in New Zealand. more »
New Filings Suggest E-book Royalties Driving HC's Suit Against Open Road
Opposition briefs were filed this week in HarperCollins' lawsuit against Open Road over the digital publisher's e-book edition of Jean Craighead George's 1973 bestselling children's book Julie of the Wolves. While both sides seek to bolster their cases for who owns the e-book rights, the filings further suggest that the case is more about e-book royalties. more »
New Imprint to Reissue Forgotten YA Literature
Ig Publishing, which for more than a decade has maintained a list of fiction and nonfiction for adult readers and reissues for the academic market, is moving into a new direction this fall with the launch of Lizzie Skurnick Books. The imprint, explained Ig publisher Robert Lasner, will "bring back the very best in young adult literature, from the classics of the 1930s and 1940s, to the thrillers and social novels of the 1970s and 1980s." more »

Cisneros Goes to E
Sandra Cisneros's The House on Mango Street, first published in 1984, will be published as an e-book by Vintage on April 30. Vintage EspaƱol will simultaneously release a Spanish-language e-book edition. Also available on April 30 are e-book editions of Cisneros's other books: Caramelo, Woman Hollering Creek, and Loose Woman, available in both English and Spanish. more » »

Distribution: Skyhorse Moving to Perseus
Skyhorse Publishing has signed a domestic sales and distribution deal with Perseus for both distribution of e-books and print books. Perseus takes over digital distribution August 1 and will begin distributing print titles January 1, 2014. Skyhorse, which says it had sales of almost $23 million last year, has been distributed by Norton. more » »

'Da Vinci Code' Gets Downloaded for Free 500,000 Times
Doubleday reported more than 500,000 readers took advantage of the free e-book download of The Da Vinci Code which included an excerpt from Dan Brown's forthcoming thriller Inferno (on sale May 14th).
