| Penguin Close to Ending DoJ, EU Price-fixing Suits Penguin is several steps closer to resolving e-book price fixing charges in the U.S. and in the European Union. Thursday, the Department of Justice filed a motion with Judge Denise Cote asking her to approve the final judgment against Penguin, which has until May 3 to file any counter papers. In the EU, the European Commission said Penguin had agreed to changes in e-book pricing that pave the way for a settlement with the company. more » At the request of police, businesses in Boston, Cambridge, Watertown, and surrounding communities will be closed Friday morning. more » The Sony Reader e-bookstore is partnering with iDreamBooks.com, a book discoverability site that aggregates book reviews and rates titles much like film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, to offer iDreambooks' ratings on the retail site. more » In Los Angeles as part of her eight-city tour for Poems to Learn by Heart, her fourth such anthology, Kennedy spoke with PW about her belief in poetry as a means to woo reluctant readers. more »
Chris Kyle E-Book Releasing April 23 Reagan Arthur, publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today that Little, Brown has acquired The Life and Legend of Chris Kyle: American Sniper, Navy SEAL, an original e-book by journalist Michael J. Mooney to be published on April 23. more » » The University of South Carolina Press has launched a children's publishing imprint, called Young Palmetto Books, focusing on series books with a local angle. The imprint plans to release two YA titles this year, with four picture books lined up for 2014. more » » At Dutton, Carrie Swetonic has been promoted to director of marketing, and Bernadette Blanco joins as assistant marketing manager. Amazon-Goodreads Quashed iBooks Plan: Amazon's buyout of Goodreads in late March also had the effect of derailing Apple's plans for the iBookstore. Court Nixes Viacom Suit Against YouTube: For the second time in three years, a federal judge has dismissed Viacom's $1 billion copyright lawsuit against YouTube, saying the online video site doesn't have to police itself as long as it removes infringing videos when copyright owners give notice.
