Trade Up, Industry Down in 2012, StatShot Shows
Sales were up for both the adult trade and children's/YA trade segments in 2012, but revenue for the entire industry fell 2.2%, to $14.90 billion at the 1,193 companies that report to AAP's StatShot program. In the adult book category, sales rose 5.6% in the year, to $4.85 billion at reporting publishers led by a 33.2% increase in e-book sales that hit $1.25 billion. more »

BJ Novak Book Proposal Draws Bidders
Another young comedian, who found fame on television, is shopping a book. PW has learned that Richard Abate, at 3 Arts Entertainment, is out with a proposal for a short story collection by The Office actor/writer BJ Novak. The book, which, as of Tuesday, had a rumored nine bidders vying for it, is being pitched as something in the vein of comedic writers like Woody Allen and Joshua Ferris. more »

Floridis Joins Zola
Zola Books, the new independent retailer unveiled at 2012's BEA, has hired Tad Floridis as director of international business development. Floridis, who co-founded Canongate U.S., will, Zola said, be "laying the groundword for [the company's] launch abroad." more » »
