Penguin Exec Named New CEO of Author Solutions
Kevin Weiss, Author Solutions' CEO who helped make the company one of the largest self-publishing service providers in the country, is leaving and will be replaced by Andrew Phillips. Penguin, which bought Author Solutions last year, said Weiss is leaving for a new position to be announced next week. Phillips is a 10-year Penguin veteran who is currently president of Penguin International, based in Delhi. more »
O'Reilly Ends TOC Conference
Tools of Change, the first industry wide conference to address the impact of digital technology on book publishing, is being discontinued by O'Reilly Media. In a post Thursday afternoon, O'Reilly Media founder Tim O'Reilly explained that after TOC 2013, the company realized that "a conference was no longer the best vehicle for us to contribute to publishing's forward movement." more »
Lehane Takes Home First Edgar
It took 18 years, and 10 books, but Dennis Lehane finally got to take home a small bust of Edgar Allan Poe. At the 67th Annual Edgar Awards Banquet, held Thursday night at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan, his Live by Night (Morrow), was named the Best Novel of the year by the Mystery Writers of America. more »
Goodreads Alternative Riffle Goes Live
It may have taken a little longer than planned, but the Odyl-powered social media tool for book discovery Riffle, had a quiet launch earlier this week. Originally slated to go live late last year, the once invitation-only site delayed opening until it was populated with plenty of book lists, according to Odyl founder and CEO Neil Baptista. To do that, Riffle added editors in each of 23 categories to help guide the content and to find bloggers to push their content and Riffle to list their books. And it will soon have a way to import Goodreads data. more »

B&N Adds Full Google Play Content to Nook Devices
Barnes & Noble's Nook Media subsidiary is adding the Google Play content library to its Nook HD and HD+ devices as well as offering Google online services as part of the Nook platform. In addition to adding more than 700,000 Android apps, games, music and other digital content, Nook devices will now offer access to Google's YouTube, Google Search and Gmail services as well as Google's Chrome Web Browser. more » »

DK Booksellers founder Neil Van Uum began renovations this week on a 6,500 sq. ft. space vacated by Brooks Brothers in downtown Cincinnati.
