Knox Book Has Modest Start; 'Gatsby' Hot
Amanda Knox's Waiting to Be Heard debuted as the #1 nonfiction hardcover, but #9 on the bestseller list overall, selling 21,264 copies, according to Nielsen BookScan, for the week ending May 5. Between two editions, including a new movie tie-in edition, The Great Gatsby sold 43,866 copies. more »
HMH Cuts Loss, Trade Sales Up
Total sales inched up at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in the first quarter ended March 31, 2013, rising 0.8%, to $166.6 million, and its net loss was cut to $137.4 million from $225.3 million in the comparable period in 2012. Revenue in the trade segment jumped 24.8%, to $39.8 million, while sales in the education group dropped 4.9%, to $126.8 million. more »
Choice Critical for Promoting Reading, Says Canadian Study
A study commissioned by the National Reading Campaign in Canada found that giving people choice and control over what they read is key to instilling a love of reading. The study's findings also support theories that there are, according to report author Sharon Murphy, "many long-term societal benefits associated with being a nation of avid readers." more »
Cohen, Rekulak Rise at Quirk
Jason Rekulak and Brett Cohen have both been promoted at Quirk Books. Rekulak, who was associate publisher and creative director, has been bumped up to publisher. Cohen, who was v-p, is now president. With the promotions, David Borgenicht is taking on the role of owner/CEO of Quirk Productions, which is the parent company of Quirk Books. more »

B&N Opens New Store in Indianapolis
Despite rumors that Barnes & Noble might be getting out of the e-reader business, when it opens its new store in Indianapolis, Ind., at The Shops at River Crossing on May 22 to replace its existing Clearwater Crossing store, it will have a NOOK Boutique along with an expanded children's department and educational toys and games. The store will carry over 60,000 books and will hold NOOK Nights on Wednesday evenings and training classes on Saturday mornings. more » »
Joseph-Beth Pops Up
Joseph-Beth Booksellers is the latest bookstore to experiment with a pop-up location, in this case a month-long Joseph-Beth Express at the largest independent grocer in Cincinnati, Jungle Jim's International Market Eastgate. Two Michigan Bookstores Win 2013 Pannell Awards
The Women's National Book Association has announced that two Michigan booksellers are this year's winners of the Pannell Award, given annually to two bookstores – one general and one children's specialty store – that excel in bringing books and young people together. The general bookstore winner is Nicola's Books in Ann Arbor, and the children's specialty winner is Bookbug in Kalamazoo. more » »
