HBG Sales Up 14.9% in First Quarter
Revenue at Lagardère Publishing rose 6.6% in the first quarter ended March 31 compared to the first period of 2012, with sales up to 419 million euros. Sales were driven by a strong performance at its U.S. subsidiary, Hachette Book Group, where revenue in the quarter increased 14.9%. HBG had a string of bestsellers in the quarter, and e-book sales did well, accounting for 34% of trade sales. more »
New Report Says Microsoft Won't Buy Nook Media
The Web site Insider Monkey posted a story Monday, quoting a "highly placed source inside Microsoft" saying that the company has no plans to buy Barnes & Noble's Nook Media group. Last week, citing documents it said it had seen, TechCrunch reported that Microsoft was prepared to offer $1 billion to buy Nook Media, but the Insider Monkey source said Microsoft "has no intention" of buying Nook Media. more »
Najafi Makes Investment in MeeGenius
Najafi Companies has invested in MeeGenius, the digital platform for selling children's books. Although the amount of the investment wasn't disclosed, Najafi said it is now "a significant strategic shareholder of MeeGenius." Among the publishers MeeGenius works with is Random House, which began offering over 50 of its children's titles through the platform in March. more »

Tantor Out with 'Behind the Candelabra' in Three Formats
Tantor Media did an initial first printing of 20,000 copies for Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace. The book is the basis for the May 26 HBO movie Behind the Candelabra and Tantor director of rights and acquisitions Ron Formica acquired print, e-book and audio rights after discovering the book had been out-of-print. more »

Crown Publishers has unveiled a new logo for its paperback unit, Broadway Books. The image, pictured left, will debut on the paperback edition of Tom Reiss's 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winner, The Black Count. more »

AARP and RosettaBooks Partner for E-book Line
RosettaBooks has announced that it has been named publisher for AARP's original e-books. The first titles are expected to be released this year. RosettaBooks will also assist AARP with various distribution arrangements and as an adviser on print-on-demand and related projects. more » »

Words without Borders, a nonprofit and online magazine, has announced that Drenka Willen is the first recipient of the James H. Ottaway Jr. Award for the Promotion of International Literature (aka the Ottaway). At Avon, Erika Tsang has been promoted to editorial director. Amanda Bergeron has been promoted to editor.

Fiona Brown joins the Little, Brown publicity department as a senior publicist. She comes, most recently, from Riverhead.

Joe Perez has joined Random House as senior art director. He was previously art director at Portfolio Books.

Last Thursday, the Westchester, Ohio Barnes & Noble hosted an event for Jeff Alt, who signed copies of Get Your Kids Hiking: How to Start Them Young and Keep It Fun (Beaufort) and led attendees in a "Take a Hike" sing-along. Alt's wife and two children, as well as his father (wearing a bear suit!) helped perform the song.

The Great Books Summer Program Expands to England
In its twelfth year, the summer educational program, The Great Books Summer Program will expand to England with a program at The University of Oxford. Previously, Great Books has hosted some 800 students at Amherst College (Amherst, MA) and Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA), and more international expansion is planned. more »
