| Marketplace Fairness Act Sails Through Senate In a vote of 69 to 27 yesterday evening, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill to allow states to collect taxes from online sellers that do $1 million or more in gross sales annually. The Marketplace Fairness Act of 2013 (S.743) now moves to the U.S. House of Representatives where passage is less certain. more » More than 18 months after it closed its last store, the Borders bankruptcy case continues to deal with unresolved issues that will determine how much money publishers and other creditors ultimately receive. Since last fall, the BGI Creditors' Liquidating Trust has been clawing back the $485 million that Borders paid in the 90-day run up to bankruptcy. more » Kobo has ventured into new territory, creating an alternate reality game called The Descent for a three-week contest to help promote the launch of Dan Brown's new novel Inferno. The Canadian-based company enlisted U.K. self-published author J. F. Penn to write three original short stories in a similar style to Brown's mysteries, which can be downloaded for free. more » On the first anniversary of his death in Mexico City, more than a dozen works by literary and political icon Carlos Fuentes will be published in the U.S. as e-books for the first time. Hackathon Update Approximately 170 hackers have signed up so far to take part in the Perseus Books Group-sponsored Publishing Hackathon, an event designed to put together teams to develop new approaches to book discoverability. Hackers can sign up to participate in the event up until the night before the hackathon begins on May 18. more » » Brenda Knight has been named publisher of Cleis Press and Viva Editions. She was formerly associate publisher and founder of Viva Editions. Cofounder Felice Newman will continue as Cleis CFO and Frederique Delacoste Cleis Cofounder/Copublisher will remain president of Cleis Press and publisher of Midnight Editions. Robin Wolfson is appointed to the newly created position of v-p, Random House Speakers Bureau. At Chronicle Books, Ryan Kelly has been promoted to the role of national account manager calling on Barnes & Noble and Calendar Club. Julia Carvalho will be joining the Chronicle Books special sales team as national account manager. At Open Road, Pete Beatty is now acquisitions director.
