| Frankfurt Book Fair 2012: At ToC Frankfurt, Data Shows E-Book Growth and Opportunity Digital has been a hot topic of conversation at recent Frankfurt Book Fairs, and two data-driven keynotes at the Tools of Change Frankfurt kicked off the 2012 show with yet more evidence of the vast potential digital offers publishers. In her opening keynote, Bowker's Jo Henry previewed some interesting global trends in the company's latest consumer survey, due to be released in November, followed by Andrew Bud, global chair of MEF, the trade association for the mobile industry, who offered insights about the emerging mobile market, also gleaned from a recent survey. more » The first Heartland Fall Forum was described by many as the best regional gathering they'd attended in years. The forum, the joint trade show held by the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association and the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association, drew 770 total attendees. more » ADVERTISEMENT Txtr Unveils Reading Device to Encourage Mobile Reading In a venture designed to bring giant mobile phone carriers more directly into the book market, German e-book retailer Txtr has unveiled plans at the Frankfurt Book Fair to release a new e-ink digital reading device that can be offered as an inexpensive premium through phone plans. The new device, called the Beagle, is a small, battery-powered e-reader with a 5" e-ink screen that would cost less than $19 when offered via a mobile data plan. more » The University of Missouri has learned that pens -- along with an ongoing and relentless social media campaign waged by a loose coalition of authors and a commission publishers' rep -- are indeed mightier than the sword. Little more than two months after editor-in-chief Clair Willcox was laid off as part of the press' reorganization announced by university officials on May 24, he has been rehired as editor-in-chief and associate director of the press. Willcox will report to the university provost Brian Foster; Dwight Browne, the interim director of the press for the past three years, is retiring. A New Way to Buy and Sell Digital Content via Ganxy Ganxy, a three-year-old online service that was originally started to sell music, goes live today with the goal to give small and mid-size presses, in particular, an easy way to sell their content online. more » » Leon Black, CEO of the private-equity firm Apollo Global Management LLC, has acquired Phaidon Press for an undisclosed price. With offices in New York and London, Phaidon is best known for its art books and does about 60 titles annually and has a 1,900-title backlist. more » » An overnight read by Shana Drehs at Sourcebooks led to a swift pre-empt, and a six figure deal, for world English rights to a novel by Dianne Dixon. Alice Tasman at Jean Naggar Literary Agency closed the deal, which is for two books. The publisher says that The Book of Someday, the first book scheduled for publication in fall 2013, is in the tradition of Kristin Hannah and Jodi Picoult. more » » Linda Greenspan Regan, who served as executive editor of Prometheus Books for 11 years, where she acquired nonfiction books and helped to build the trade list in the area of popular science , died October 4.
